don't understand bringing players into the squad and just have them sitting on the bench in a couple of friendlies

Friendlies are hard to judge. No real motivation to play at 100% for most players, conscious more not to pick up an injury, business end of the club season ultimately more important. The team created quite a lot of chances but as per usual, really lacked a cutting edge. Can we suddenly click in tournament football - it's possible but we'll need a bit of luck along the way and a few of our players back.

Although he scored I thought Bellingham was far too slow on the ball and made a lot of mistakes, an element of arrogance and believing his own hype is sitting dangerously in the horizon

Overall a very average performance again … lots of mistakes … lack of cutting edge.
I agree about Bellingham starting to believe his own hype.

Football novice here.
12 replacements including 2 goalkeepers is a bit excessive?

It’s a bit early in his career for ‘fans’ to start pulling him down.

Had a slightly off night, and still scored.

it's absolutely classic. got some truly world class players in the middle of the park finally and people just want to have a pop at them.

meaningless friendlies in the thick end of the club season. not the best barometer really. give them all a proper pre torn training camp and then see what can be done. it's the back line which is the main concern.

Yet other players in the same stage of the season are running their socks off and playing much sharper, or are they playing a different season to Bellingham?

The only classic part is that we’ve seen this sort of taken for granted attitude all too many times, we don’t want Bellingham going down the Rashford route

Ah yes visible effort that ever so reliable measure of a footballers worth.

Goals matter, Bellingham scored.

Was a make shift defence and three massive errors cost us.

Nothing to do with having an "off night" he seemed to be whingeing a lot at the officials and getting involved with opposition players............no need for him to do that and should let his football do the talking IMO.

I do envy the people who are at the absolute peak of any role and never have an off day

That pass from Lukaku though... He had all the attributes to be one of the best players of all time

A few thoughts on last night.

My first ever England game, a month short of my 56th birthday! Enjoyed the build up, would have been quite exciting I guess if it had been a competitive international but no matter. Here's ten things I took from last night.....

1. While I don't blame anyone for going early, especially with 80k trying to shoehorn into a small area after the game, it was quite amusing to see a 90+5 equaliser go in. Have never been one to leave early, not even as a supporter of Yeovil Town, but good finish and great way to end the evening.

2. I know our first choice back four would be Walker-Stones-Maguire-Shaw but last night, Gomez-Konsa-Dunk-Chilwell was underwhelming to say the least. Both full backs barely threatened, Dunk is like Maguire that you've ordered from Wish and Konsa suffered from playing with three poor players. Never thought I'd say this but feel better with Maguire in than Dunk, that's for sure.

3. A few critics of Bellingham but I'm cutting him some slack. Clearly some teams are going to target him so that (a) they injure him and/or (b) they wind him up till he loses the plot. The Belgian sub, 14, that came on last night did that twice and you could see JB getting flustered. That said, credit to him for coming up with a 90+5 leveller after a night to forget in front of goal. Still a huge talent.

4. Anthony Gordon. I like him a lot, could be the answer to having a left footed, attacking, run-at-the-defender issue we have right now. Good cameo last night.

5. Jarrod Bowen. So impressive last night, really like him. Runs himself into the ground, takes on his defender and generally looks lively out wide or in the middle. My MOM last night just ahead of Kobbie Mainoo who I also like a lot.

6. Jordan Pickford. First clanger leading to a goal in an England shirt, according to stattos on Twitter last night. Amazing if true but it was a shocker. Like Maguire, he's not great but arguably the best we have right now.

7. Biggest cheer of the night (until Bellingham's goal) was the first paper aeroplane that made it down on to the playing surface. Became an obsession for the bored fans to see if any others could emulate the inaugural flight but only a few others made it.

8. Biggest boo of the night was when a former Liverpool midfielder's name was announced in the pre-match team read. Hopefully we don't see him in an England shirt again, we have better options there. Not many, I know, but better.

9. Belgian fans. Loved them - noisy for most of the game, and supported their team despite the vast majority of them getting soaked right through. Generated a Mexican wave during a lull in the action second half and got it going quite well (I'm no fan of Mexican waves, btw) but they were good overall.

10. Took a while to get out afterwards but well managed by Wembley staff. Rained all night, still raining when we got back to Bristol at 1am, so was raining when we were managed on Wembley Way but got out quite quickly and was back in Ickenham Station car park by 10.45pm. That's a result IMO.

Can't say I feel an ounce of sympathy for Wales considering how bitter they always seem towards us.

Ha ha! Lukaku to me looked smaller, er….shorter than normal. Always came across on camera as really tall but not last night.

Probably because he was near the Donk.

No, the point was that you were trying to cite circumstance as a reason for Bellingham effectively strutting around, slow on the ball, and generally having no effect until the last kick of the game, the point was that those circumstances didn't seem to affect a lot of other players, so that point is irrelevant.

Goals matter, and Bellingham finally bothered to turn up in the box at the end instead of having arguments with the opposition or venting at officials. He needs to not lose on field focus, its clear he wasn't at the races mentally last night.

And I think I remember two massive errors costing us, what was the third one?

Nice write up. Saw the rain, it was shoveling it down all night!

Point 2, I do think we miss Shaw massively, Chillwell just doesn't seem the same player post all those injuries. Hope Walker and Shaw are back soon, along with Stones. That said, two goals were conceeded not from unfamiliar players, but from basic unforced errors which was disappointing.

Point 3, agreed massive talent, but one that needs balancing in terms of managing an ever increasing ego

Point 5, yes Bowen and Mainoo both had great games last night, best two players on the pitch for England. Of course if Bowen was at one of the traditionally big clubs he would be on the plane as back up to Saka, but we know Southgate has some specific biases

Point 8, yes agreed that 'man' shouldn't be near the England team especially after seeing a mature Mainoo performance last night. Also closes the door on Phillips as well I think unless he has some sort of momentous run to the end of the season

I am still concerned about the Foden problem, all the players seem to have buttoned down in roles and positions but Foden again was invisible out on the left, only when he came inside did he show glimpses, but thats now a congested space in the team...

On the occasions I see Bowen on TV he reminds me of the type of player you would absolutely love on your team at every level of the pyramid. I'd take him as backup or sub injection.

He's a right back though isn't he? I think he has covered at left back a few times though.

He's also injured a lot, but the times I have seen him play he looks absolute quality.
