Brentford FC - Come on you Bees
Discussion
Top 10 guaranteed, excellant season.
Now the rebuilding strats for next season, see we have been linked with a few players - I assume David Raya will be off, and maybe something sort of agreed already with a club, unlikely we would go for the keeper we are being linked with if Raya hasn't said hes off.

Blimey, quite a ban? https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65626690
Shame really for all involved.
For Toney - Silly thing to do. It'll put him out of the England light for a while if not permanently and likely scupper any big move he had on the horizon.
For Brentford - Losing him until January is worse than selling him on at a price. Any premium that was once there has now likely gone.
For the system - It's been messy at best. He didn't bet on any games he had influence or knowledge in, and admitted it, so 8 months seems harsh. Not allowed to train? Seriously? 8 games for Mitrovic, 8 months for Toney. Not sure there is a comparison here either, especially whilst betting is still everywhere in stadiums etc.

This is the great irony. Sadly betting is everywhere you look, it’s intrinsically woven into the fabric and culture of the game. It’s a joke. UTH said:

More than I was expecting.........thought it would be no more than 6 months tops.So long as players don't bet against themselves or their team I don't see the issue.
Betting/gambling has alway been rife amongst footballers,Paul Merson,Matty Etherington to name just 2 from recent times and Stan Bowles was famous for coming straight from the bookies to the changing room pre matches at Loftus rd.

He was a silly boy to do it, everyone knows the rules regarding this.
I too was expecting 6 months tbh, will see if a appeal is lodged, but I guess we will just loose Raya this summer, and not toney.
Mixed reports currently, I think he can train from September with the club.
I would ask the question though why it has taken so long, obviously if we had lost him sooner our season could of been very different, as in probably relegation.

Timing is fortuitous I think given he'll serve a good proportion of his ban off season. Appeal will no doubt be lodged and ban reduced so he might play in the autumn.
Good proportion.....?2 months out of 8 isn't a good proportion in my basic maths mind!
He won't be eligible to play until almost end of Jan 2024.
I read on another place that all footballers bet so why ban him. Well he got caught that's why. You can't punish those who aren't caught so FA has their hands tied on that one.
Where I previously worked (was in football), we were instructed not to bet and could be sacked. I know that people placed bets on football as well as information that they had found out such as transfers, managers getting sacked etc. Should I have gone to my boss about this? Probably. Why I didn't is because he probably were doing it as well and its not my place to police his staff.
As a footballer you know the rules and they are set out from the get go. Doesn't matter if your a player from abroad, Premier League or National League, you are told not to bet in football and not at all on anything in general. That way you can't be accused of anything.
Either way Toney got away with it lightly considering how many counts he got found guilty of. He should serve his ban and if he wants to appeal, FA should tell him that, if it fails the ban is longer (at least double). For me it's a clear cut case, this isn't like he's had 1 bet on him scoring a goal. So serve the ban then move on. Yes he can't play until 2024 but he can train in September and he's not going to become a bad player over night. Probably will still bag a load of goals on his return.

Written reasons for his ban published today: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/may/26/i...Where I previously worked (was in football), we were instructed not to bet and could be sacked. The headlines are a little misleading. The 'betting against his own club' was against his parent club Newcastle, when he was on loan at Wigan. He could hardly have influenced that match. He also bet on himself to score. That's just confidence, right? (joke)
Joking apart, I think he has got off very lightly here. What concerns me more is the comment here "It added he had since ceased gambling on football, though not on other sports, and is "determined to address his gambling problem with therapy"
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65721139
I know addiction is a complex issue, but I don't see that cutting out gambling on football but still doing it on anything else is really helping him.
I mean, it's not as though he needs the money is it?
It would be a shame if someone with his obvious talents made a fortune from the game and lost it all to the bookies.
