Women's world cup 2023
Discussion
If the terrible quality and skill level continues, and viewing figures reflect the dross on show, then we may at long last stop having it rammed down our throat at every opportunity.
It's annoying enough when news programs like Sky Sports News, or radio stations don't state it's a womens team they're talking about... such as:
"Earlier today, West Ham beat Chelsea 3-0" yet it's the womens team
No one cares. Or at least caveat it by saying it's the women (Say Men also if you want - just be clear)

Keep wishing , this World Cup is going to be touted as a huge success for the game pretty much whatever happens It's annoying enough when news programs like Sky Sports News, or radio stations don't state it's a womens team they're talking about... such as:

It’s the same with cricket - now we have the women’s Ashes and in the intro to the Ashes they mix up clips of the women’s team and keep cutting to what’s been going on with the women’s series. It’s not enough that they are spending huge amounts of fee money covering events hardly anyone is watching so they force exposure by diluting the coverage of the men’s sports.
Same thing applies on the BBC football pages online, it's difficult to differentiate sometimes as they are deliberately mixing mens/women's football news stories to put them on an equal footing. Apologies bbc but I've no interest I watching it or reading about it, politically incorrect as that may be.
Where are all the male presenters & pundits? In the mens game there’s a women in every studio/touchline, same for other games rugby/cricket none at all so far I have seen. I thought we were meant to be inclusive?
Mind you they’d struggle to contain their laughter at the dross on show.

This'll put a price on my head but:
Up here in Scotland they show a (mens) league match every friday night, live on I think it's BBC alba.
If you think the England game was poor........
Just watched the second half of Sweden v RSA. Lot of kick & run, RSA poor marking, Sweden the better side but two things Sweden ned to note.. The Heimlich manouvre isn't really considered legitimate marking and if you're rolling around in apparent agony, don't look up to see if anyone has noticed before continuing the acting.

Watching Portugal v Netherlands and the woman commentator does my head in. She won't string a sentence together without stopping 4 or 5 times throughout. So it goes something like this: "And the Netherlands have... the ball... on the wing, and... there's three minutes of... injury time now... so... they will waste... time. etc. Dreadful to listen to.
The BBC is intent on pushing it hard at every opportunity seemingly over and above many other sports at the moment and it does get a bit wearisome.
I've no issue with the game or women playing football but, as others have said, the quality often just isn't there and it is still a minority sport compared to the men's game. Just this week there was a show on 5 Live where they were talking about wanting equal pay compared with the men's game and it was just laughable that no one pointed out the obvious elephant in the room.
Hopefully it does continue to improve to a point where it is comparable. As an example, I find women's tennis and athletics just as enjoyable as the men.

Contrary to some, I don't mind watching it
Haiti were up for the game yesterday and have some strong players. England were sloppy in passing and end product - a slow start but that might not be a bad thing. I've watched plenty of England mens games and I could give the same comments about plenty of their games!
The relative quality of both teams playing in these matches isn't that dissimilar, so there's a contest. Albeit slower overall.
The Dutch/Portuguese game that's just been on was decent enough.

The game on right now France v Jamaica is pretty typical, just looked for ten minutes and it's pretty much Sunday league level at best, everyone chasing the ball / no real control and with a rough female commentator to match. It's probably a few years off being exciting and watchable if ever. I know all the big clubs have female teams now but I think they need to concentrate on getting it all established in every nation to an acceptable level before its pushed at every opportunity.
It's never going to have the power and speed of the men's game for obvious reasons. Doesn't stop there being a contest
The mens teams aren't exactly perfectly matched throughout a World Cup tournament.
There are...oddities....with the coverage. But watching the girls come through youth football I only see it as a good thing that it gets billing. And the oddities will even out in time.

I thought it was a good game.France one of the best teams in the world. Jamaica rated 43. Close game. Rating’s didn’t matter.
0-0 draw. But it kept you on edge, competitive, good chances by both sides.
Close game. France had more chances and more of the play.
Jamaica defended well, and kept a clean sheet.
Tough group, France, Brazil, Panama and Jamaica.

(See my comment above about some mens football)
Saw the first half of the Netherlands/Portugal match and it was OK, it's not Man C v Inter something or other but they're reasonably well matched.
As for equal pay though - same comments as the Tennis, the mens game is more exciting, gets more spectators and they work a heck of a lot harder at their game (well some do - see Djocky v Alcaraz).
