Mainoo called up to the England squad. Well deserved
Good stuff, that England squad has some serious quality! To be fair, anyone familiar with this thread of late could have probably made that mistake
On topic, Willo is 100% correct. We have a great generation of players, attacking espeically, in the national team now and for me I think there is quite a risk it will be wasted by poor risk averse management.

Judging by the papers today it looks like Gareth is definitely your man.
Nope for now it’s ETH. It’s a quiet week due to internationals and those online ads need clicks and there’s nowt more clickable to our millions of fans and detractors than United gossip particularly on a slow news days. No one knows outside of the clubs leadership. Very few ever do and certainly I’m sure SJR could have announced it on the podcast he did this week where’s he dismissed us being in for the likes of Mbappe in the short term.
It’s was Potter a few weeks ago, DeZerbi last week and Southgate this.
I certainly hope so. Coming up with Southgate would be very uninspiring. It would be like going to a posh restaurant, having so much choice and potential, and then deciding all you want for dessert is a luke warm bowl of semolina - and nothing sprinkled on it.
I suspect what has happened is a bit like you say AMG. The press had two weeks of 'ETH out / he's awful' stories based on the anger clicks from us getting a pasting by pool in the cup. The result on Sunday () has scuppered that a bit, so they've reached for the next best thing to get people frothing in Southgate. I think I saw a poll somewhere that had the fan base at something like 85% no to Southgate, so it would be amazing if we did genuinely go for him based on that - surely Ashworth and co wouldn't be quite so daft to do that, even if they somehow thought a someone with no past record of management success at all in the league would be a good idea.

The thing with Southgate that cuts through the speculation is timing.
He’s already said he’ll make a decision on his England tenure post Euros. IF ETH goes it will probably mean we’ve lost to Coventry and continued to fail to improve in the league and we will need his replacement ready to go at the end of may. I think Southgate may well have his mind elsewhere….not one mention of that in the recent reports…

New owners always tend to want to make a statement and have their own man in the dug out, and given the potential churn of managers in the summer from the top clubs they might decide that someone is too good to turn down and sack ETH, but they might also decide that ETH is the right man and continue with him for next season.
A couple of reasons I think he will be the manager for next season is the following:
- The CEO and DOF normally pick the manager and potentially they wont be in place until after the summer.
- Very good first season, not great second season but there is mitigating circumstances and it would be good to see what could happen next season with
a better squad and less injuries
- ETH contract has one year left so if you sack him it will cost a chunk of money, plus a new manager will want to come in and maybe you need to pay to
get him and he will want a raft of new signings and we dont have the money
FA Cup semi-final thought. Something that seems to have gone under the radar or not mentioned anywhere that I’ve seen at least is that Coventry’s manager is Mark Robins. I wonder if there’s a positive sign in there for ETH after Robins (supposedly) saved SAF his job all those years ago
The press will have already had their "EtH to be sacked" reports typed up and ready to go before the game on Sunday. Unfortunately for them, United won in emphatic style so they have to scurry around to find some glimmer of negative press towards United and EtH with the Southgate appointment.
