Good argument, but I'm on the other side of the fence. It's the FA cup and if we win it, it's a major honour to add to the 1976 triumph and a 1st Division runners up medal. It's bragging rights and whilst the PL may generate cash, I want trophies.
We all want trophies, but consistent decent PL finishes will generate more cash, potentially bringing more trophies more frequently in the future.

Watch us now win the FA Cup and me make a complete tt of myself by declaring it the best day ever!

Watching this on BT, swathes of empty seats. Are the ticket prices too high or has the Cup really lost it`s appeal?

The FA cup lost it's appeal the best part of 20 years ago. Mainly due to the easy access to live football on tv in general!

But it's still fantastic if you win it!

Stupid game to show at a stupid time & a 12-45 ko for Southampton fans would have surely meant an overnight stay & a bloody long drive home ,

or go to the local pub ? know what i would do.

Probably the worst I've seen us play this season. Don't think Poch was too fussed to be honest. Well done Sunderland but carry on at your peril in the league!

I think they could've won it with the starting eleven if they had the fire and desire to do so. It was a poor show.

Rickie's miss was a shocker! And I had a few quid on him to score.

Nevermind, onwards in the league then...

We're 3 points off united and 6 off Everton! Good times, and now we just floor it from now until May I say.

Onwards and upwards etc.

Still gutting to see us play that badly. Just when SRL had found his boots again too!

A pathetic and lacklustre performance.
A performance that showed our club could not give a rats arse for the biggest cup competition in this country.
So what if we finish 7th or 8th ? I would rather finish 12th and win our 1st major honour since 1976 !
We had a massive opportunity yesterday and blew it. Possibly our worst performance since the Liebherrs took over.
The SKY sports generation will think the league is the bee all and end all. That prize money is king.
We will never win the league. We will never finish in the top 4 but we can win one of the cups if we really want it.
Try telling the 800 who left Southampton at 4:30am yesterday the cup does not matter!
I am as angry today as I was yesterday. This season is now over, 12 meaningless games to play. We may finish 7th if we are lucky, Mopo would dread finishing 5th or 6th as that could mean the Europa cup next season which he admits he has no time for.
Roll on 2014/15!

Very well said. Most disappointing, it seems odd to throw a chance at any silverware away like that. Not very 'Saints' IMO.

It was.

I think most people do, but I also think we have people driving it who are thinking long term. Most fans don't look at it that way.

Given we were in league two several years ago and have worked like fk to get where we are today, I think saying "so what if we finish 7th or 8th" is pretty unfair to the players and staff who've worked hard this season so far. We're doing brilliantly!

Yup, it probably was. I'd have been screaming at the telly if I didn't have one of my 4yr olds next to me.

SaintsPaul said:

Not sure if that's aimed at my previous comments, but I'm not sure what the "Sky Sports Generation" is. I (30) don't have Sky Sports, but my brother (28) does, as does my F.I.L. Sadly, prize money is king. Money brings big players, ones that you build squads around. Cash is king, as it is in all walks of life. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

SaintsPaul said:

Probably not, no.

SaintsPaul said:

Won't we? I think if we carry on where we are headed we might start challenging the top 4. Liverpool are massively inconsistent, Spurs are all over the shop and Everton are doing better this season than normal. We've beaten Liverpool this season, and narrowly lost against spuds and Everton....are we really that far away? Southampton in Europe.....has a ring to it!

Feel bad for them, I genuinely do. I practically never get down to St Marys let alone travel to see them. Life's too busy with work, kids etc. I respect all those who do and feel bad for them. Going to Sunderland is bad enough on it's own.

I don't think they're meaningless. I enjoy each game. I'll be elated if we finish 7th, as that'll be our best finish in my lifetime. If the league doesn't matter, why do we bust a gut playing 38 games a season?

Sorry, I'm not trying to be picky or anything. I feel the disappointment too, but this season I'm not really fussed what happens in the cup if we're caining the league. If we are sitting 13th/14th and practically safe but not threatening the top half, I'd probably agree with you more. But then we're all different smile

Some sensible responses to my rant yesterday.
I still feel that the position we are in should have pushed the club to go for the cup.
Everton still have a chance to finish in the top 4 but still put out a good enough side to beat Swansea yesterday.
If we had fielded our 1st 11 on Saturday we would have won that game and would have scared Poyet half to death.
It is a poor show when your manager cannot be bothered to do any press conference associated with the FA Cup. He is our 1st team manager after all !

I did wonder why he wasn't doing the press conferences. I get the feeling MoPo isn't the nicest of blokes, but he's still an awesome manager laugh

I watched most of the Everton game and they fielded most of their regular starters. Martinez is clearly more devoted to the FA Cup than most foreign managers, which is really nice to see. Admittedly they have a slightly shallow squad too, but the difference between their reserves and our reserves is bigger than the difference in our starting XI's. If they get any injuries, or even players getting a bit jaded they're going to start struggling to contain Utd, or catch spuds, or even catch their best friends over the park. That said, I think Everton are an ideal team to have a go at the cup - in recent years they always finish around 6/7/8th. They don't seem to be forwards or backwards in the PL (though up to the halfway point of this season that looked like it was going to change) so they've got less to lose by having a bash at the cup. Most people would expect them to finish where they are, or possibly below Utd.

Whereas us.....we're not normally in the same league, let alone the same half in the same recent years, so it's not all doom and gloom! These are good times and I'm sure they're going to get better and better smile

He's the best Saints manager since Dave Merrington

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Southampton_F...

Who was/is Steve Wigley ?

MoPo has genuinely been the best thing to happen to Saints since we left the Dell. There is no way we should worry about the FA Cup - look at Pompey, they won the CUP and that was the start of their demise. It's just business now, the FA Cup is no longer the pinnacle of the season and the brave managers are quite happy now to plan the team around league squad performance than worry about a trip or two to Wembley along with the injuries and fatigue.

How you can compare us to that rubbish down the road is beyond me !
They won the FA Cup with players that they are still paying now. Their owners never had any real money or any real structure. Unlike us who have both.

Now go and wash your mouth out and write 1000 lines of "I must never compare our great club to the inbred fishy few from down the road" biggrin

I haven't seen anything on the West Ham loss. Anyone know where it all went wrong?

I've been to Upton Park a couple of times to watch Saints before they were relegated from the Premiership last time and they always lost then.
