Lambert is back up and a useful striker of the type we don't currently have, he was cheap and a lifelong LFC fan - so a good fit..
I doubt there's a Saints fan out there who would have begrudged Rickie his dream move - he was an absolute legend for us.

I still question whether his lack of pace and mobility will fit well with Liverpool's style of play, but time will tell on that score.

And whilst I don't think £4m is cheap for a player of his age / stamina levels, we'd not be able to replace him with anyone as motivational and talismanic for double that amount..
This.

I fail to see how a footballer like Spidermans ambitions or dream is to move to a team like tottenham. Just admit you want a higher salary.

i could understand if it was Barca, Real Madrid, City etc...

Would this be the same Tottenham that had a torrid season last year that beat the wonderfully multi million pound valued Southampton side home & away ?

They can`t all be greedy tw*ts?
Ridiculous thing to say.
Why?
You telling me that all the players who will leave Southampton will have done so for footballing reasons?
Half of them will be bench warmers, earning a fair bit more than they were on.

Gone are the days when a player just wants to play every week, some would sooner play half a season and pick up a bigger wage.
Sorry my quote stands.

Bertrand needs a bit more self belief, then will be a good signing.
Jack Rodwell, if you can keep him fit will be a good signing too.

Right, so if a company offered to pay you 20/30/40/50% more than you currently earn and for you to work less hours that you'd tell them no? They still train all week, they may just not feature in every game.

Do you honestly think the clubs buying them are saying "you'll be on the bench, but we'll pay you more" and the players are happy with that? I don't care if they earn more, I don't blame them at all, but they're moving to bigger clubs with a chance to play on a bigger stage. Maybe some of them will end up being on the bench a lot, but it doesn't mean they're solely moving for money.

Completely different scenario, we are talking about young football players, not Joe average, those players, who at 18,19,20 should just want to play football.
I know its a short career bla de bla, but if i was good enough to be a professional player, i would sooner play every week than bench warm.
The difference between £30k a week and 60k for a 20yr footballer is hardly significant, its still more money than he will know what to do with.He can still go out and buy his Lambo or Ferrari on a months money not a fortnightrolleyes

Romelu Lukaku anyone, could have stayed at Chelski on more money but chose to go to Everton to play regularly, refreshing when you look at whats going on at St Marys

That's your opinion and it's fair enough, I just look at it differently.

agree on the mobility, but think he will be useful when the oppostion parks the bus and we are playing the whole game in their half, trying to get a break - so need someone to get on the end of a cross rather than counter-attack at 100mph
SRL is a legend in these parts but one of his faults is not being able to get off the ground very well.
Very seldom did you see him outjump the centre half either in the penalty box or in build up play.
He is superb at bringing other players into the game and his hold up play is great. Just don't expect him to leap like a salmon when crosses come in biggrin

I think the point was that Spurs are a good club, but have not consistently delivered champions league football or won trophies in recent seasons whereas Barca, Man City and Real have. Cannot deny the results from last season even if I thought we played better than Spurs in the first game, we still lost.

First game we didn't play better. We were pants, could have been 5 at one stage. At White Hart Lane we were very unlucky. Agree with your points though.

Yes, my mistake, I meant the game at White Hart Lane

I expect some of the desire to move to Spuds is because of Poch. Let's be honest, we might all dislike the bloke now, but he brought more of those players out of their shells than I can remember, including J-Rod and Spiderman. They probably just want to work with him again. You could say Spuds are a more successful club, but they've only got the old H word to fall back on. You know, the one Liverpool keep using to justify the fact they haven't won anything for years. I hear from many different sources that with the exception of Ramirez, the entire squad loved working with him and his methods. He was certainly the best manager we've had since Ball or Strachan. Funny how it's only the ones who stick around for a year or so!

As for all the other moves, I don't think it's a money thing so much, though it probably pays a part in it. At the end of the day, say you're a pro-footballer and you pack it in at 36 or whatever. Years later someone asks you who you played for - "Oh, Bournemouth, Southampton, Liverpool/Utd/Spurs/Arsenal".....sounds better than Southampton being your peak. I suppose it's a feather in a cap, a chance to be part of something bigger. Lambert knows he's going to be a bench warmer, and Lallana must be part of a planned rotational system, but I should think Shaw will be starting within a season and Lovren would be a starter for most EPL teams. Likewise Spiderman.

They can't all be MLT, I suppose.

Torrid season? Finishing 6th is not bad and you finished higher with your great big multi multi million spending spree. Probably should have aimed for 5th after spending that though, so maybe it was torrid...

It seems you get players coming out with the excuses of ambition to try and justify their move, as a short cut to CL.

But still, not really showing 'footballers ambition' by wanting to join a team not even in the CL. All money.

Or maybe its just flight

Bugger! Since Hyppia retired 100 years ago, our corners are more dangerous for us than for the opposition, unless Skrtel manages to rugby tackle his way to the cross.

btw what is the S for in SRL?

Aha - well I hope you recover from the exodus next season. I take no pleasure in my club making life difficult for your club.

I think most football fans hope Soton have an ok mid-table season, and then recover with the new found wealth to build again.

What are expectations like for next season, I guess hard to say until you've spent more of the windfall

IMO -

Bertrand < Shaw
Tadic > Lallana
Pelle > Lambert

Chambers was not first choice for right back.

As it stands, that leaves just Lovren to replace to leave us arguably no worse (maybe better) off than we were last season - JayRod's injury aside, of course.

And looking at the potential targets the club has for CB, then I'm quietly optimistic.

That said, I am very disappointed that we weren't able to build on the squad and team spirit that we had last season. It's also a shame to see some of the Academy lads having their heads turned after just a handful of games in the top flight..
