7th will give Europa League, if Arsenal win the FA Cup, however your ranking will be done on the European coefficient, a sort of points system if you like, this will probably mean entering the competition at the early qualifying stage, which will mean coming back for pre-season even earlier and playing a couple minnows at the beginning of August.
Ideally you want 6th which will mean one qualifying round then into the groups.
Or you might be better off scrub rounding the competition all together and concentrating of the League for another season?
My team, Everton have had a very poor season, a lot of it had to do with the Europa IMO. Martinez stuck all his eggs in one basket trying to win it, decent wins against Wolfsburg, Lille and Young Boys all Champions League regulars, but we fell short, we never won a game following a Thursday European match. And that will be a major concern.

Be interestingfking hilarious if Eastleigh play Portsmouth next season!
The Europa League seems a mixed blessing, unless you're in with a real shout of winning it.

You're right about Europa too. I reckon we'll likely go into it now, but I've lost some of the excitement about it, which is really stupid as we've never got into Europe off the back of a league finish before.

...and (I assume this was the joke/point our friend was making) all the English teams were banned from Europe after the incident at the Heysel Stadium the previous year, so we didn't get to take advantage of that success.
Wasn't that 1985? I think (could be wrong though) that this was the season ahead of that. Gassing Station | Football | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
