A sound first half, but we lost our way a bit after the double-sub in the second half.

Cedric looks very promising - a more than capable replacement for Clyne, it seems.

Mane was superb. His speed absolutely terrified the Vitesse defenders.

Davis had one of his better games for Saints - some good chances created as well as important break-up plays.

Wanyama was a total beast, definitely my MoTM. Clasie's home debut was 'subdued' so Vic ended up doing the work of two - and he did it with some style. Had to laugh towards the end of the game when the Vitesse midfielder saw Wanyama coming at him like a rhino and chose to toe poke the ball into touch rather than face the tackle !

Also thought Stekelenburg, Yoshida and Targett put in very solid performances.

And a special mention to the the Vitesse fans - they were very loud, and quite amusing at times with their chants in English.

Bring on the away tie..

Yep, I'd pretty much echo those thoughts. Wanyama was MOTM for me too, superb tackles and desire. If he has a season like that we're in for some good games.

A very shaky start with the hoofing, shoddy play and low possession, the first half was very average until the first goal. They seemed to settle much better after that.

Mane was great. Excellent workrate, won the penalty (doubt it would be given the in PL) and Vitesse couldn't really handle him.

Clasie was very quiet and hardly had a touch. He made one decent tackle and that was pretty much it. I hope his injury isn't too serious. He doesn't look £8m so far but it's early days.

Pelle; good to see him score, super strike for the first goal, pretty good overall but missed a sitter later on. No excuse for not hitting the target at this level.

Tadic; disappointing for me. Too many errors for my liking and doesn't keep the ball as much as I'd like, but he scored an ok penalty.

Jose Fonte-baby was steady as always, no real dramas.

Long made a difference when he came on; he must be a nightmare to play against with his pace. His touch isn't the best but he made the 3rd goal happen and thanks to a great pass from new signing Juanmi, Long headed home.

Saints should not have any problems in the away fixture but they can and should keep more of the ball IMO. Vitesse were pretty quiet apart from their fans. I couldn't make out what they were singing most of the time but they made a decent noise in the 2nd half.

Mild weather and not a bad run home after the match. A decent night out.

An excellent result last night and not unexpected for me.
I saw Vitesse in a pre season game last week and was not impressed. They were nowhere near the standard of Gronigen or Feyenoord.
Don't worry about Clasie. Saw enough of him last week to see he will be a decent signing for us.
Does the simple things very well.
I can now travel to Arnhem next week and really enjoy the trip biggrin

Great result, clean sheet and 5 goals over two legs. Now seeded and to face one of these unseeded teams:

HJK Helsinki (Finland)
FC Thun (Switzerland)
Astra Giurgiu (Romania) - knocked out West Ham
Midtjylland (Denmark)
Odds BK (Norway)
Qäbälä (Azerbaijan)

I don't like the green away strip.

I only saw the first half on a hooky stream but the defence was dreadful. A point was a good result from what I saw but I didn't see any of the second half. To be fair to the Toon, they looked pretty organised up front.

Had a great trip thanks.
Arnhem was superb.
Would have taken a point before the game today. Nice not to lose the opener.

Flights and hotel booked for Denmark biggrin

Yep, a point away is fine by me, especially with a weakened defence (or one not defending currently).

Have fun in Denmark!

Romeu from Chelsea then. I think he should be a good signing.

Seemed to lack ideas.

Ended up just humping it towards Pelle (who worked hard to be fair)

Yoshida was poor again, too easily bullied. If we can get van Dyck it would improve things immeasurably.

Not a great start but a long way to go. 5 goals conceded in 2 games is very poor. Hopefully things will improve with Bertrand back and if they can sign Van Dijk

Man U enquiring on Mane apparently. Hopefully Ron will decline, unless it's a shedload of cash.
