I don't want to be a pessimist here, I don't even want to label myself as a "realist", but with Man United and Chelsea back on it this season we'll struggle to get where we were last season.

This isn't because we didn't do X or Y in the transfer window or we're playing a formation the players arn't used to yet it's because I don't think this season everyone's going to be taking points of everyone else, I think there will be a bigger split between the have and have not's.

I'm happy to live with that, we're just a very well run provincial club and when the bigger clubs lurch from one self/media made crisis to the next we take advantage. Top 10 this season i'll be happy. European tickets bought too, fantastic value.

Just looked at our squad, it's not too shabby at all. We've/they've spent quite a bit of thier money. It could well be as good a squad as last season.

The trouble is, the top clubs have assembled incredible squads.

Maybe we could have had Jack Wilshire at £90k pw!....
A number of the 'lower' clubs have also strengthened as well though, beyond what we have in my opinion. And I'm not talking about Wilshere... We could and should have bought in a top striker and a good centre back but for whatever reasons we haven't.

I've resigned myself to anything above 18th being a result this season. A run in a cup would be nice.

Very good performance from what I saw on the telly last night. The penalty was fortunate but the result was right. FF and Romeu saved Yoshida's blushes on a couple of occasions but apart from that, a great start.

With Inter losing at home, Saints must have a good chance to progress. Good to see JayRod net; should do his confidence a world of good.

I was front row behind the goal, it was a pen but I've seen many not given. He slid in with his arms up, first time I've ever seen those assistants behind the goal be useful!

All our team played well, Sparta really wernt much and didn't like losing towards the end!

Enjoyed the result last night, know you can only beat what's in front of you but that Sparta side was one of the worst teams I've seen at St Mary's for some time.

The first half hour (before Sparta changed formation) you could drive a bus through the gaps between centreback and fullbacks...as evidenced by Austin!

Anyway, cracking start for Saints. biggrin

Another win and Austin staking a claim for a starting place. A long way to go, but we miss Pelle/Mane

Nathan Redmond having the mother of all offdays in front of goal helped.

Whilst our new 'striker' was pretty good away from goal, Romeu & van Dijk (and probably Forster) were head and shoulders above Redmond on overall performance.

Does anyone know what the situation with Jay Rod is?? Injured again? I really fking hope not! I'm not sure we can survive until Jan with only 2 strikers.

Pains me seeing other clubs scoring for fun...I just can't see us ever scoring more than 1 at the moment!!

He picked up a knock and needed a scan, apparently.

His old man on Twitter reckons it's nothing serious and that he'll be back soon.

Haha, yeah I should've said in the league. With all due respect to Sparta, they are Championship/League 1 equivalant. We should be scoring plenty passed teams like that.

I was surprised they got so far last time, they were pretty poor!

Mind you we did that to Vitesse last year. Just didn't give them a sniff. Standard Saints' procedure here is to beat Inter away, and then lose to Harper-beer-whatever from Egypt.....at home laugh

Haha. They beat Inter away so they might be worth keeping an eye on!
