I don't care about Liverpool, if they win it then they've deserved it, won't stop me loathing them but my interest is Everton and I would love us to qualify for the CL at all costs. I still think it's asking a lot though and will depend as much on Arsenal's form as our own.
This.I'm not bothered if Liverpool win the league. I'd rather they won it than Man City.

Come on, can you imagine a Gooner posting that on the Spuds thread (or vice-versa)?
I'd rather see us beaten 10-0 than help the Arse to the title. Which, with the way we've been playing lately.....
Surely the blue-noses feel the same?
The crucial piece of the jigsaw you're missing in your analogy is you winning to get in the CL but helping the Goons win the title, or losing 10-0, losing out on CL, but Goons don't win the title.I'd rather see us beaten 10-0 than help the Arse to the title. Which, with the way we've been playing lately.....
Surely the blue-noses feel the same?
In my more accurate analogy - which would you choose? Goon title and Spud CL, or no Goon title and Eurjoka Spud oblivion?

But, in answer to your hypothetical question, if Spurs had a team I thought could realistically compete in the ECL and not exit (albeit gloriously) in say the last 16 then I'd want Spurs to get in, obvs.
Failing that there are no circumstances under which I would want the Goons to win the EPL.
Quick point: If you put that exact question to a Rangers/Celtic fan how do you think they'd answer?
I don't give a st about Rangers and Celtic. I'm talking about Liverpool and Everton.
So... if I understand you correctly (no guarantee as your debating style is all over the shop) if you were offered 4th now, with the proviso the Goons won the title, you'd say no because you'd think you'd get your arse handed to you at the group stage next year??

In a nutshell, AND if your analogy held any merit, then yes I'd rather the goons didn't win the EPL this year even if it meant we didn't qualify for the ECL.So... if I understand you correctly (no guarantee as your debating style is all over the shop) if you were offered 4th now, with the proviso the Goons won the title, you'd say no because you'd think you'd get your arse handed to you at the group stage next year??
Clearly the Liverpool/Everton rivalry is not really a rivalry at all.

Is Arsenal/Spurs really a rivalry as well though? I mean Arsenal are a much bigger club, much more successful over their time (except in the Anglo-Italian Cup I'll give you that) and if I was a player I know who I'd rather join by far. I'm surprised Arsenal fans really bother about Spurs.Clearly the Liverpool/Everton rivalry is not really a rivalry at all.

What points total do folks think we will need to take 4th spot?
I'd say 74 points will clinch it......But I still reckon that at the last game at Hull we'll be winning 2-1 and Jelavic will equalize in the dying seconds to relegate us to the Europa League..
It's inevitable.........
Or we'll clinch 4th and Utd will win the CL...

So you'd cut your nose off to spite your own face. Check. I'd go the other way as success for Liverpool overrides all. Clearly the Liverpool/Everton rivalry is not really a rivalry at all.
I guess this is a view into the Spud mentality though - don't give a hoot about the success of your own club, instead preferring to take pleasure in the failures of others.

It is isn't it. They realise it's unlikely they'll win anything so the priority is for their perceived rivals to not win anything either.Shame. CL 2005 shows how underdogs can triumph against overwhelming odds - not just on the night but in the whole campaign. And now it's part of our glorious history.
