Well as things are at the minute I would not be surprised if we were to get relegated.

And the sad thing?

I'm not sure I'm bothered anymore. Something needs to fundamentally change around the ownership before the club can begin to move forward. I don't care that we haven't won anything to some extent. It's the fact we are not even pretending to try to win anything.

Pathetic.

Exeter City fan in peace. As I've mentioned on this thread before I have soft spot for Newcastle, same ground name as us, play in stripes. smile

Serious question. Isn't this the same thing that happened with Newcastle last year? If I remember rightly you had some absolutely dreadful performances with comedy defending as the season came to close then?

If that is the case, it sounds like you might have a culture within the playing squad of "Oh we've done enough to stay up now, we'll just coast to the end of the season,"

They might be in for a very nasty surprise...

In my opinion, that culture belongs to and begins with the owner.

It's clear he took a gamble when presented with, probably, his ideal scenario for letting Pardew go;

1) he got paid by Palace to do so. Win-win in Ashley's eyes.

2) The team had enough points to stay up

3) Carver was cheap, 'local' and therefore had the fans backing

4) Carver would be just good enough to see the season out.

So far he's managed one of those.

I hope by the seasons end it hasn't backfired but the reality is I'm pretty apathetic to it all now.

I could care less, but cannot be bothered to.

I feel dirty saying so frown

Never mind the sleeping giant of cup-less years (decades), there is a sleeping giant of pride in the team and club which needs awakening first.

I hate saying this but I think we need to be relegated for a change of owner to happen, maybe twice to be sure, and there is no guarantee the next bloke will be better. if we stay up no amount of fan protesting will change anything Imho. With increased TV revenue Ashley doesn't really need the fans so I can't see us affecting any change.

I wonder how much of an increase in attendance Gateshead will get for their games next season.

Blimey it's just as well the Barcelona of the north has the bestest, loyalist fans in the world. Imagine the meltdown if you were actually going to get relegated like it looks as though my team will.
Just out of interest did you follow your club before the invention of football in 1992?

He did not sell when we got relagated so there is no reason he would sell now if we got relegated again.
Protesting shall not shift him, only way to get rid of him is by effecting his pockets as that is the only language he understands.
There has to be proper boycott of the games, that in my opinion is the only way to get rid of him.

The bottom line is Newcastle United doesn't exist to win football games or trophies (not that we've ever been too good at that! But at least we tried. See 1995-2005) Newcastle United's sole purpose is too make a profit for Mike Ashley. Ashley has seen an opportunity to make money and seized it with both hands. He seemingly does not give a fig about the supporters so the only way he'll ever sell up is when it hits him in the pocket. To be honest I can't really be mad at him because I can see it from his point of view. He thinks he's keeping a well established and supported club in the Premier League and lining his pockets at the same time. For me it's the lack of ambition that hurts. The club coming out before the season saying they won't be trying in the cups and knowing that although the support and money is there it'll never be invested in the team beyond keeping us in the Premier League. It's been going on so long now I'm just losing interest in the club and sport in general.

I don't think Newcastle is unique in it's positioning, however I do think that Mike Ashley has been the only one to say it outwardly.
As fans, 99% of you will never support another team so they know you are loyal and cannot change your brand (team) The stadium is usually full, shirt sales are high and it's a profitable business....... and therein lies the disconnect. Fans see Newcastle as a team, as a passion, as a community. Ashley sees it as a business like many other owners in football do now. Football has changed from a sport to a business and Newcastle is the example no fan likes to see

The club should belong to the city whose name it bears. Ashley, as a manifestly unfit and improper person, should be forced to sell up to Newcastle City Council for the sum of £1.

This is a genuine question as I don't know about the background of Ashley's take over, but what sort of position were Newcastle Utd in when he took over?

If the supporters want rid of him then its season ticket renewal time soon - don't buy them. Stop buying the shirts etc etc.

And do you actually think that a football club run by Newcastle City Council would fare any better, I've not seen anything quite as funny on PistonHeads for a long long time.....

Most people are confusing a desire to see a regime policy change, with a vocal minority who want to see Ashley out of the club. The same vocal minority who ousted Alan Pardue leaving us with the hapless idiot who is currently mis-managing the players.

Ashley's financial backing is good for the club however most people want to see that financial stability leading to a stronger on-pitch performance, that's the change most people want to see from the existing regime as most people are sensible enough to know that Ashley will NOT sell the club for £1, he would only ever sell the club for a significant profit and most people are realistic enough to know that there are not that many people out there with that kind of cash. The Ashley-out campaign is utterly pointless unless it's being led by someone with £350million in their back pocket!

Yes, they should have appointed a proper manager when Pardue left, however they were taken in (like a lot of supporters) by John Carver and his 'Geordie passion', and the results speak for themselves. He is just not up to the job and the total lack of interest from the players shows he can't motivate them at all. Maybe Ashley hoped he would perform as well as Chris Hughton did when he was given the caretaker manager job!

I just hope that they have somebody already lined up to take over from him at the start of the transfer window.

Newcastle needs a re-boot on the pitch not in the boardroom, a proper manager who has access to sufficient funds to bring in some new players and give the whole club a lift. That will allow Ashley to disappear back into the background like all the other unsavoury characters who own football clubs these days.

I'm glad I've entertained you.

It's not a realistic proposal, I understand that. However, if it ever could happen I'm sure the income from match tickets, shirts and whotnot would allow the club to survive in whatever league. It would be a proud club once again, serving what remains a proud city rather than dragging its name through the st on a weekly basis.

Would this be faring any better? Perhaps not in terms of league position (currently parlous), or even revenue (most of which seems to be going straight to Sports Direct in terms of free advertising, etc.) In every other sense it would be faring much, much better. Any of this making sense to you?
