Actually I believe the reason he wears red is due to several marketing companies, like an old political magazine/publication called Harper's Weekly issuing drawings of him in various outfits - I believe some of the earlier ones were of him in a green or tan/brown outfit. The Coca Cola company gets mentioned as a key proponent in the change but that's not true - although they did widely circulate imagery of ol' Santy Claus in red of course.

Remember the only reason Santa wears red and white is because he's not real.

Looked good in the first half and pressed reasonably well and despite Defoe being isolated at times we looked the most likely to score up until the diddled us, defence fell to pieces after that - abject tripe display in the second half.

That Mckhilithikfhgyoii goal was so far offside he may as well have been in the car park, t'was a good 'un though in fairness

Borini's goal also excellent - alas, sixty minutes too late.

Burnley at Turf Moor next, that ain't easy, it's a bit of a fortress.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to one and all, even to Ellroy and his black and white coupon busters! argue

Anyone wanting a laugh must see the first 3 goals, pure comedy classics. No way back for us relegation for sure.

Great atmosphere today, all but 47,000 in the place and some good footy played by both teams, which the officiating hampered somewhat (bad calls for both sides there).

All in all an enjoyable visit to the SoL, better than the 1-4 tonking I watcm hed Arsenal give us laugh

Still, losing like that to Burnley and then putting a shift in like that 2 days later against a team like Liverpool... That inconsistency will cost us dear.

You seemed to play a different game today i felt, you kind of got at them & got in their faces.

I was at WHL when you visited earlier this season & from the off it was clear you didn't have much ambition or intention of scoring a goal.

Thought you played well today & in Defoe you have a real chance of avoiding the drop.

Yes I thought that the performance today showed some glimmer of hope, just have to hope that losing key players to the African Cup of Nations doesn't have too much of a negative impact.

As I said some time ago, I'm afraid as long as Moyes is there, we have no chance of survival. He's just so bloody negative and dour.

We have no money for badly needed strengthening, yet apparently ES's net worth is 6th highest in the Prem - he's clearly not committed to the club, and there continues to be lots of rumours about it being up for sale - perhaps for the best in the long run.

Paper talk yesterday was Viera coming in to replace him. Today it's about PVA going to Palace.

Whatever happens, we're doomed this year, and we need to start planning for that.

I think Short's ongoing investment show he is (or was until very recently) committed to the club. He just keeps making terrible staff decisions. It's more expensive surviving being bottom of the league every January than steadily floating mid-table, but he hasn't hired the people who can get them mid-table.

So we get the ongoing merry-go-round of players and managers and the ongoing malaise and frustration of the supporters.

Compare the chaos at SAFC to the stability at Stoke (probably on a lower budget?), and the resultant completely different atmospheres around each club.

I was thinking the same. Constant managerial changes with some very strange choices over the years. Every transfer window its seems you buy 6 or 7 players with most of them being shocking. Often buying premiership cast off's who are well past their prime and just there to pick up a wage. No wonder Ellis Short has finally had enough and refusing to put more money into the club.

I know being relegated is never good, but will it give you a chance to clear the decks of the rubbish and start again with decent young championship players that want to play for the club.

I think you're right - lots of poor player/manager investments (Big Sam aside perhaps?) previously, and now he seems to have run out of patience, and he'll be off as soon as someone signs a big enough check. Committed once, but no more, I feel.

My point on Moyes still stands though, would we be in this position if Sam was still at the helm? I can't help but think we wouldn't.

Villa fan here - we were desperate to get rid of Lescott, a universally disliked Big Time Charlie whose best days are loooooong behind him.

I'd like to be proved wrong, I've got a couple of Mackem mates and we have shared our lower-end of the Prem frustrations over several seasons, but I really can't see him as the man to turn your fortunes round.

Prepared to buy and eat SAFC hat if he proves to be a club legend!
