Devilstreak said: So would you guys take him back in a few months when he's failed at Anfield and taken massive severance pay? To tell the truth, I'm not to disappointed at him going. At least it's to a proper big club with real ambitions to win things, not a small Cloob like Wigan My real dissapointment is the thought of possibly (probably) losing sigurdsson after coming > < this close to signing him. A proper premier league class scoring midfielder! I'm getting s t off people about Brendan coming back to take players such as Joe Allen and Ash William. All I can say is Liverpools cheque book better be ready to take a raping. £20mill for Jordan Henderson wasn't it??? They can f k right off if they think they can take those two for peanuts

Agree it feels like a rough week. I think Pasc may at some point come back and manage us if he can emerge from being the No2, and that if LFC are patient for 2 years that BG could go on and be a very long term appointment.
So whats the future for us? Great business on the compensation. Great business on the player protection clause. Great shop window for talent. But we need to dig our heels in now to survive the threat of not being able to attract a quality manager. No2 from Wigan, somebody who followed Martinez coming back in the circumstances of their results last year - no thanks.
We need to be broader, braver, and consistent with the substance of what we do. It doesn't need to be a big name, but we can afford a decent name, not a back room boy. Brendan did his time in that role, made mistakes as No1 at other Clubs and then came to us. If we take a No2 now he'll make mistakes when new in role - we cannot afford that.
If we've protected the squad I am convinced the Board must have thought broader and braver - they'll disappoint with anything below that.

Not sure how wise the protection clause is. Do you see Sunderland, Aston Villa, Blackpool or Newcastle being unhappy with their compensation for players lost the last year?
You would probably have gotten a fat cash injection if Brendan was allowed to take a few players with him..

Flatline,
Let's be frank, for every Club that survives year 1 there is a year 2 risk of relegation. Whether we like it or not that risk has just increased with BG and back room going.
The player protection clause is a great commercial move, there are players in contract who could have an optimum value at the end of the 2012-13 season, its shrewd business, and would give us a fighting fund if we really need it should relegation be a threat or reality.
In addition it also gives the players a real fix of certainty, save i imagine for Gylfi. Gylfi's goals got us into safety, his medical was last week, terms agreed before. There's only one reason the deal hasn't been concluded !

The strong money is on Laudrup being announced as new manager tomorrow.
I think it is a great move.

Judging by Huw's last appointments, it could be anybody, especially as we have a cool £5 million that those nice scousers gave to us to spend on a new manager.

I agree. A little out of left field but surely a great appointment. I'm pleased for you. I hope there isn't some kind of Nordic affinity with Gylfi though
