So I have made an appointment to test a WRX on Saturday. They have asked me to bring proof of insurance though? I would have thought their insurance should cover a test drive and I'm not sure mine covers me.
most grownups insuance covers them to drive vehicles belonging to other people with their consent, as long as they have a current policy on the car as well.

I've never been asked that before so it seemed strange to me but I'll take my cover note etc.

Grownups? I'm more grownup than I'd like to be

Private sale or garage?

If it's the latter that's very odd. They should have traders insurance to cover tes drives.

If i's a private sale then that's quite right and conscientious of the seller. Their insurance won't cover drivers not named on the insurance.
Do check that you have a 'drive other cars' clause on your insurance and that you ARE covered. Would be horrible to get done for no insurance on a test drive.

If you're dead set on the car when you've seen i, but not covered, it might be worth asking the seller to add you to their insurance policy to drive it to seal the deal. Normally it can be done on the spot over the phone for a small fee.

It's a garage, and I'm glad it's not just me that thinks it's a bit strange

Nowadays most fully comp policies will show entitlement to drive another car with permission of the owner however, it is only third party cover.

If the car in question has no Tax or MOT then it would be test driven on trade plates. I'm pretty sure they include Insurance/Tax/MOT for test drive and vehicle delivery purposes.

It certainly has tax as I've checked the numberplate. Not sure about MOT though

I'd be wary of driving it even on your policy to be honest: It's very likely that you could fall into a grey area where you aren't covered to drive cars 'in trade'. An as far as grey areas in insurance go, it means you're not insured.
By all means go and view the car, but I'd be wanting to get to the bottom of their set up if they're asking customers to test drive cars on private insurance policies that are designed for no such thing.

Do you think I should email and ask? I booked the test drive online so I have an email address for them

They must have a phone number. Give them a call and bottom it out before you have a wasted trip.

This is the car http://www.stchristopherscars.co.uk/used-cars/suba...

I've done a couple of online insurance quotes and apart from a crappy company giving a really cheap quote, the best I've got down to is about £700. I will try ringing my current insurer to see what they can do, but are there any good places to try?

Thank you I will give all of those a go tonight.

I know it will have an alarm and immobiliser, I just ticked factory fitted on the online insurance quote thing. It won't have a tracker will it?

Be aware that Directline may only quote if you have a Tracker fitted.

The quotes they provide without trackers fitted are pathetic.

ESure were the cheapest for me, beating A Plan. :0/

Mine did and that was a bugeye. I've no idea if they still fitted them later on. It may have one and just needs activating. I used to pay £110 a year.

I'm not sure if these days your insurance is going to be any cheaper as a result but i stopped my tracker a long time ago as i didn't see what the benefit was. To be honest if some scrote stole my car and ragged the arse off it for any extended period of time i'd rather they binned the car or just kept it.

You should ask if the dealer knows if it's fitted with a tracker and ask the insurance how much cheaper you quote will be as a result. You may find it's not worth bothering with.

I will ask about a tracker on Saturday. Yes Esure are the cheapest so far for me, apart from one company who I've read terrible reviews of so won't use.

I'm currently with Adrian Flux so I will see what they say too.

One thing worth considering. Road Tax

Although the later cars look a lot sharper, the previous shape (55 plate or earlier) are only £270ish a year to tax instead of £460ish for the later one like the one you are looking at. Same tax band as an R32.

This shape

As with any car look through the service history, dont disregard a mint example just because it doesn't have main dealer history, but if you are choosing between a number of similar cars, (and you might well be, with current fuel prices its a buyers marked for performance cars) main dealer service history is a good sign its been looked after.

Should have documented cam belt change arround 60,000 miles. If the one you are looking at is on 50k miles will need a cambelt soon.

The one I posted above said it has had the cam belt done, I do keep an eye out for that now after earlier advice from this thread.
Yes the road tax thing is something I've laboured over. I did think about getting a 55/06, but I'm already in an 04 and I tend to keep cars for a few years so I might as well get as new as I can I suppose. £35 a month in a savings account will cover the tax.
The tax thing drives me mad, at the moment I'm only doing about 3k a year, and even though that will go up it's still a low mileage to pay that much and still have to dodge potholes frown

They are called 1st Central. I thought it was strange how much cheaper they were so I did a bit of research and decided to avoid them
