My 2000 model Honda CVR makes a shuddering "dry" sound when turning a tight corner but goes away when wheels are straightened.....What could that be caused by ?
Any suggestions ?

When I was looking at these it was quite common. A change of the rear diff oil should resolve it. You'll only notice it on a full lock type turn (ie car park).

What he said smile Ours had this and diff oil change during service got rid of it.

Well I took my Honda crv to the garage but was told that they would not do the differential service.I had to go to a HONDA dealership and would cost about £180.00.
Sounds like a rip off to me .
Im really peeved

Have you asked Honda? It will not cost £180, Honda will sell you 1 ltr of DPF oil for the rear diff + some labour, should get change out of £90ish

Just change the diff oil and its fixed. This is caused by moisture getting in to the Diff oil. As the car drives 99% of the time as a FWD car the rear diff never gets used, as it never gets used there is no heat generated by the Diff do burn the moisture off.

As soon as you carry out the diff flush/diff oil change this instantly corrects the juddering and grinding noise. this should idealy be carried out annualy at time of service.

Hope this helps

Well guys it seems rather peculiar ....if it is so simple , why wont an ordinary car workshop do this so called oil change or service ?
Why would they refer me to a so called HONDA dealership ?
I asked the question and was told the HONDA dealers have the correct equipment to do this job.

Perhaps it is not as simple as it seems.

I've just had a look at the CRV workshop manual and I cant see anything odd to do? There is an oil filler plug and a drain plug and 1L of fluid . It just recommends changing the washers on the plugs. I'd get a quote from a Honda dealer - I know not the same, but I had a minor service and the diff fluid changed on my S2000 and I dont think the total cost was £160...

It's not a difficult job, but don't use anything other than the correct Honda Diff Oil - it's not that expensive.

Once changed drive it in tight circles each way a couple of times to circulate the oil.

Thanks guys for all your advice.
I finally plucked up the courage and tackled the job myself.
I just removed the filler plug used my good old oil can and squirted the oil into the hole until its started running out ....put the plug back and hey Presto job done!

I'm not too surprised your local garage wouldn't do the job. If the original oil wasn't changed in time and the damage was already done, then the oil WAS changed, who you gonna blame when it fails terminally? Of course, the garage that changed the oil. (Its £1500 to replace the diff. Its about £80 to change the oil as an extra at the usual service.

You did drain the old fluid first?

Yep, common issue, needs a minimum of a change, maybe even a flush (change oil, drive for 10 mins and change again).

Same issue with Jazz CVT boxes.

Main thing is, to use the OEM fluid recommended (CVT oil in Jazz, not ATF).

Hi, appreciate this is an old thread, but it covers exactly my sister's problems with her CRV.

Was over at her place in France for Christmas and the car was juddering on tight car park turns, mirroring the problems mentioned above, but it has also on a couple of occasions lost traction on the back wheels whilst cornering or on roundabouts and I wondered whether a simple fluid change could solve this problem also.

She has taken it to her local garage in France, they are suggesting that it requires probably a replacement diff, which will need to be carried out by the nearest Honda main dealer, an hour or so distant, could it really be as simple as a fluid flush and replacement?

Yes it'll just need a diff oil change, not a replacement. I have a 2010 CRV which had exactly the same problem. I changed it at the weekend and the car no longer groans at low speeds on full lock.

The diff needs 1.3 litres of Honda Duel Pump Fluid, don't use anything else.

These guys are excellent for Honda parts;

Thanks very much, she's over in France, so I'll have to rely on her local garage, they're pretty good, but not Honda specialists, I'll make sure she specifies using the Honda product.

We did this in a Honda garage

Change fluid in diff

Take to a car park , lots of. Tight turns left and right moderate speed

Take back to workshop , change fluid again

Test drive noise gone
