Subaru Legacy GT-B Manual question

Hi all
We bought a 1996 manual Subaru Legacy 2.0 GT-B wagon a few days ago and yesterday i was driving it and i put my foot down whilst it was doing 2000 ish RPM and waited for the revs to rise but as it hit 3000 RPM the needle just hit it and wouldn't go any further. This continued until i got to the destination and after it cooled down it seemed to of solved it itself.
What does this sound like to you?
I will be getting investigated further but i thought i'd just check if you've heard of this before.
