I'm thinking of trading my 08 Megane R26 for a Blobeye Impreza Sti.

I've never driven one but I've always fancied one so it's an itch that's going to need scratching sooner or later.

The only 2 that are near me are:
This one

and this one

They seem pretty similar but the price difference is quite big. Can anyone see any reason why one should be worth 1500 more than the other?

I'd prefere a Type Uk with PPP and DCCD. Are there any easy ways to tell whether they have either?

Great choice! You won't be disappointed.

Looking at them, I'd be leaning towards the second one you linked. I don't get a great feeling off the first one.. from the dealer or the car! It may not say much about the previous driver.. but having Monster stickers on it I feel like it was probably owned by someone who wasn't all that mechanically sympathetic.

The second one seems be being sold by a Subaru franchise, hence the slightly enlarged price tag. 9 grand is a lot of money for the car though.. you are buying from a dealer so that's to be expected. You could probably pick one up for 7-8k in a private sale but if you like buying from a dealer I can recommend Hurst Cars and JCT Cars. Not sure where you are but it's worth traveling if you like the cars they offer.

Example from JCT http://www.jctcars.co.uk/used-cars/subaru-impreza-...

Hurst have a Japanese import that would be stronger spec wise, going for 8.5 but 79k miles.

PPP should have a certificate and a plague (which I believe is inside the door shuts? Don't rely on that, just off the top of my head.

You'll be able to tell if it's got DCCD by looking next to the handbrake, you can see in picture 2 on the second link that there's a small switch next to it, that's the DCCD roller switch. It comes on 2005 blobs.. not 2003 or 2004 (unless it's a Jap import). You can tell if it's the 'Widetrack' model from the outside by looking at the rear arches. The 2005 models have a ridge extension type thing that goes over the rear wheels on the body work. Hard to explain so I made these pics!

It's worth checking the "Cars for Sale" section on Scoobynet for well looked after gems for a bit less than dealer price if you're okay with private sales.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions smile.

Cheers James! Helpful info there.

Yeah I know what you mean about the first car and garage. The Monster stickers set off alarm bells for me too, but I might go see it anyway (or at least phone to see if the service history is in order etc).

The second car is a bit further away, and I don't think it has the PPP, but I'll give the dealer a call and see what they say. I do think it looks overpriced though, considering this was on sale recently at Hurst (and it was cheaper) - http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/s...

That one looks stunning. I emailed them today and it's been sold. I'm in Scotland so choice is a bit limited unless I travel hundreads of miles which I'd only be willing to do if the car looked good (I went 650 miles there and back to get the Megane).

I'd also prefer not to have a mega loud or oversized exhaust. The Prodrive one looks good to me. Do you know how loud a Prodrive is? Is that a Prodrive that's on the car I linked above?

I'll take a look at Scoobynet too.

Are you planning to modify at all?
If you are I wouldn't get caught up on it being PPP. You can buy a aftermarket exhaust with one of the CATs removed and get it remapped, end up with more power and probably pay less overall for it. Unless you really like the Pro drive parts I'd say get a standard or already modified (with receipts and mapping proof from a respected place) DCCD STi type Uk.

If you will never modify though or don't want a modified, get a PPP one, definitely. Otherwise you won't feel much difference or be much more impressed with it over your Megane.

Also, while what I hear of JCT are good, they are also horrifically overpriced IMO. As long as you're careful, buy with plenty of receipts and FSH, and do the usual Newage Impreza checks - piston slap, blue smoke, sub frames, suspension knocks etc. you can get much better for a lot cheaper or at least better for the same price.

Not looking to modify it, so like you said if I dont get one with PPP it wont feel much different to the Megane.

This one looks reasonable but appears to have aftermarket wheels:

Anyone familiar with the dealer? They have a few for sale.

Looks ok but I tend to use first impressions with unknown dealers and those photos are frankly st but he does seem to specialise in Imprezas so who knows. It's also an early Subaru management car by the look of it but check the log books and just make sure it's been serviced correctly. It's very hard to knacker up these cars and they're very reliable but do go in with your eyes and ears wide open.

If you see a sidetrack without DCCD it'll be a parallel import likely from Malta. Nothing wrong with these at all and they are UK spec but it's done with things like an aftermarket tracker and alarm rather than the factory units. The centre diff is always in auto. Personally I avoided one I saw as it would have been harder to sell on.

Oh and I do like you saying you won't modify it smile
