Plenty of wide arch kits and tuning options available of course. The quicker steering rack would be a harder / more expensive mod to make to a Type R or P1... There's a fella on the p1woc who has fitted a spec-c quick rack to his p1. No idea how much he paid but I saw one on eBay recently for £2k. Lot of money for a steering rack on an old impreza!

To get close to the 22b driving experience I guess you'd be best starting with a type-r which already has DCCD.

Base car: £5k
Wide arch kit £2k
Respray £3k
18x9" Alloys and tyres £2k (although you could just use spacers)
Quick rack £2k
EJ22 CDB £3k
Engine components, turbo etc £5k
Labour for the above... £3k?

It gets expensive! I saw a cat d 22b on eBay a while ago for £10k!

Is the 22B steering rack any quicker than the Type RA quickracks?

I think so, there's a long thread about racks (hurr hurr) either on here or p1woc, will have a shufti.

Then there's the suspension and chassis mods - rose jointed links, bushings, ally bottom arms, wider track, plus seam welded body

I'm pretty sure the 22b rack is the same 2.25 turns item fitted to the v6 RA and available as an option on the v5 and v6 classics.

Incidentally I've managed to pick up one of these racks this week for £200 smile

Of course it would cost big bucks to make a 22b replica, but I am curious as to whether it really drives appreciably better than a Type-R and if so, in what aspects. I remember the 22b being criticised at launch for lacking enough compliance for British roads, although modern tastes are much more tolerant of stiff setups. I should add that I think 18s on a classic are overkill and that 16s are the way to go...

Some of the earlier STi-RAs had the quickrack as well - I almost bought a Ver2 STi-RA V-Ltd once that certainly did. Might have been optional rather than standard, I'm not sure.

16's really limit you on front brakes though...

Getting a quick rack for £200 was a good catch! Nice one.

I thought the 22b was 2.1 turns but I may well be wrong.

Aren't they all "resting" in garages?! Shame really as they're beautiful cars imho.

22B seems like the most hardcore and nearest to a WRC Impreza.

Maybe (in UK compliance order) P1, Type R, 22B, McRae's WRC

I think the 22b's spec makes a lot of sense for the track, but I suspect that on British roads the smaller wheels and rubber bushes of lesser classics come in handy.

So, that's all right then, we're now certain our humble classics are in fact better than the 22B smile

hehe

The amount I've spent on my p1 I could have bought a 22b but I wouldn't want to put the miles on one!

Of ALL the Impreza's, I think the P1 is the most fun (for the UK) smile

Based on Jap STi V apparently with some "charcoal briquettes" in the fuel tank, bad decision wink

But with sublime UK-tuned suspension unique to the model.

Pretty sure a V2 (pre-facelift) wouldn't have had the 2.25 turns quick rack which was specific to the later R/RA Ltd models and the 22b. It would have the 2.5 turn rack, while regular WRX and UK models made do with 2.75 turns.

Not sure how the turns lock to lock equate, but the data I've seen (which also agrees with the stuff on Type-ra.co.uk) quotes a 15:1 rack for most of them and a 13:1 quickrack being standard in the ver6 Sti-RA and optional for earlier STi-RA (incl the v2).

That particular v2 was a V-ltd (the one with the McRae/Ringer autograph seats etc) so I expect it was top spec with all the optional goodies. It had the little STi quickrack sticker in the corner of the rear screen, but I'm well aware that stickers don't mean that much!

ETA: Found a thread on 22b that says 15:1 is 2.5 turns and 13:1 is 2.25. Also says:

22b said:
Classic Sti 4 door has the same rack as a UK at 2.7 lock to lock

Sti Type R and Sti RA mostly have 2.5 lock to lock racks

22b, Sti 5/6 RA Limited and special order Sti's have 2.25 lock to lock

I'm not 100% positive but think the sticker on the back window denotes 2.25 turns, so if the V2 was stickered then it was likely was the pukka quick rack.
