What matters is the compression ratio. This has not changed as we used pistons that had a CR of 8.2:1 coupled with slightly thicker head gaskets to compensate for the skimming. The upshot is that it does not need a running in map, instead just drive it off boost. However, I will probably get it in the rollers after 1000 miles and just make sure there's no det.

The beast is back! 150 miles in and running great. Once nice and warm there is no noticeable piston rattle at all!

1000 miles and then I will get Simon to give it the once over. Then come summer it will be a new turbo for 400bhp...

Finally I got the map tweaked after the engine build, which seems like an age ago! Anyway, Duncan at Racedynamix managed a rather good 353bhp on the standard turbo. Dropped the boost to 1.3 bar which helped liberate a few extra horses as it now runs cooler.

Since the rebuild I have not driven it properly, so it's great to really use the full rev range and not worry. I still plan a turbo in the new year, but the shocks desperately need sorting as they are knocking like mad

The shocks situation is a pain in the backside to be honest and poor show for Subaru considering their reputation for build quality.

I am sure you know your stuff well enough but if the idea of replacing them with coilovers crosses your mind I wouldnt recommend it. I replaced mine with coilovers and after 6 months of driving hell they were off and sold. Superb on the right stretch of road but 90% of the roads we use in the UK are a potholed lumpy bumpy mess and coilovers simply cant respond well enough to it. To be honest, i found then almost dangerous at times.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest before someone recommends replacing them with coilovers!

I'm with you Ian. I had Tein coilovers on my last STi and whilst they were great on the track, on the roads they were hard work. I will do some research and perhaps see if I can find a middle ground.
