5k should by you a nice wrx... my 02 WRX wagon was 2.5k 2 1/2 years ago and they appear not to have dropped in price much since.

budget for insurance. imports are more expensive to insure than UK cars.

I would say buy either a mostly stock car.. but thats just me.. if he is getting a modded car.. get paperwork who did the mods and how easy are they to remove, are the orignal stock parts included with the car.

get a 2.0 not a 2.5.. it prob wont be much faster then his civic (type R??) if he is expecting this then he will be disapointed.

get onto scoobynet and ask there.. much more active.

Good advert and seems genuine and not too far away from you. Just get that blowoff value removed as it does nothing positive for the engine at all - it needs the air venting back into the air box so get a standard recirculating one instead. Forge do some nice uprated ones.

The main things to look for are a smooth and powerful shove from the turbo, no knocking noises at idle from cold or generally odd clunks when you're on the move. The usual things about full service history and the cam belt being done on schedule in the log book and you'll have a very safe and reliable car.

For your budget you should be in a facelift car.
So that's an 05/ 55 plate with around 60k miles.
They have soft touch buttons on the vent, and a smaller steering wheel.
You will find the newer Hawkeye in that price range. Same interior as above and a 2.5 230bhp engine, but beware the tax is nearly 500 pound on anything post march 06

Insurance could be a killer. So could the car though...

The best price I could get for insurance on my first Impreza (2005 WRX) was £695 when I was 28 with 10 years no claims, no accidents etc. so I would imagine the insurance for a 20 year old will eat half of your budget. There are a lot of nice looking (as far as they go) low mileage Bugeye WRXs around for 3k at the moment, or 4k for a higher mileage Blobeye.

The blobeye WRX in the above link looks like a good example and with PPP it will be significantly quicker than a Civic type-r, if indeed that is the type of Civic he had. I test drove a type-r back to back with a WRX with PPP as I was torn between the two. The type-r was an epic car but the WRX was worlds appart in terms of performance and all round grunt.
