Two things misbehaving on my 54 Legacy 2L: for perhaps ten seconds on start up, a belt slips somewhere and screams like murdered fairies until a few blips on the throttle settles it down.

Also, the power steering has become a bit "notchy" and juddery towards either lock.

I'm guessing the two symptoms are related or connected or even exactly the same thing, but I'm a mechanical dunce so don't know. The car will be going in to my local mechanic in a few days to be sorted out. But in the meantime, any suspicions what it might be?

Aux belts. My STI did the same thing. Just change them as it's a pretty simple job.

Excellent, thanks! I hoped it might be simply belts, but worst-case-scenario feared it might be a new power steering pump or something.

Check the bearings in your pulleys, to make sure they are not on their way out too.
