I have never been under any illusion as to how good Subarus are in poor weather, I've ploughed through some serious snow in the past high in the Pennines were we live. Today we went to Lowther Show and did a couple of circuits of the off road circuit Subaru UK had created. The current XT Forester with X-mode amazed me on some seriously steep slopes of saturated mud and grass, on standard Bridgestone tyres as well. It would have been good to have taken some footage, however I came across this from a couple of years ago in much gentler conditions than we encountered today. Still impressive stuff though……… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-ix8Xq6NJM

How was the X-Mode in mud (that video is before X-Mode existed on the Forester)? I'm thinking of going to a pay and play site next month (where they have routes for SUVs with road/all weather tyres).

X-mode is really impressive, the hill decent aspect is brilliant, various abs related noises and groans but the car descended some seriously slippery steep inclines with very little fuss, doing a 'U' turn half way down such a slope was amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Nxhd2itIp4

Impressive stuff!
In the first vid the technique seems to be to simply give it loads to stop the the power spinning away in one corner & to get all the wheels turning.

Back when I had an 03 Forester XT, I took it on a off-road day at the army training area in Fallingbostel, Germany. Other than ground clearance I found I had no problem staying with the Army's Wolf LandRovers. My only worry was keeping the revs up when wading =-O
