My sister in law has got a 2001 WRX wagon sat on her drive that the MOT ran out on some months ago. She stopped using at as it had developed a problem where the engine light came on when ever she gave it beans, her boy friend pluged it into the code reader at the garage he works in but they couldn't find what was wrong.

Given time I'm sure I can work out what that's up.

She wants rid now & I've always liked the car so offered to come & buy it off her, just I'm not sure what a fair price would be, an suggestions? It's done about 100k miles, not had the cam belt done & is in possibly slightly below average condition with a smashed fog lamp & big dent in one door.

If it was some one I didn't know I start with a silly low offer but as she's family I'd rather just her a fair price for it.

Classic or bugeye? Either way probably not worth much as a battered M.o.t failure with running issues.

Bugeye. Are Classic's worth more? I noticed there was a MOT failed classic on eBay with a buy it now price of £1500. The auction got up to about £800 then was pulled so I don't know what it went for or if it was actually sold.

Probably similar money in the same condition to be fair. I was just curious as to what shape.

Certainly a lot less than £1500.

£1500 was the ceiling for the Top Gear Africa Special. Hammond arrived in failrly tidy 02 Bugeye WRX Wagon.

If you have somewhere you can store it for a couple of years, I think you're looking at a future classic. Especially if it's un-modded.

Sorry to be of no help!

I'm afraid I disagree, even nice Impreza wagons are never really going to be a future classic IMO. I have a classic wagon and it's a phenomenal all-rounder (and definitely a long term keeper for me as I love it!) but it won't share in the kudos of the 22B/P1/RB5 etc.

OP I wouldn't pay more than £7-800 for your SIL's WRX.

Thanks for the the advice, I'm buying more because I like it than as a long term investment. I will have plenty of room to keep it & quite a few others when we move in a few weeks. I keep it as a runner rather than stored though.

Are the cam belt kits all £400? I guess you don't really want to skimp on things like that though!

I can see it owing me £1500 buy the time I'm done with it.

At least. Bear in mind the suspension will likely be pretty tired so you should budget for new springs/shocks if you want to keep it a while. One of my front shocks had failed by 86k miles, though new KYBs and Eibachs all round was the best money I spent on my car (so far!) - utterly transformed!

Nobody seems to have mentioned that the CEL light coming on after hard acceleration in the Bugeye is very common and not always a genuine fault. Does the CEL reset after 5 or 6 trips by any chance? Wouldnt worry about it..

That sounds encouraging, thanks smile But I'm fairly sure she said it lost all power at the same time as the light came on, sounds like limp home mode (assuming they have that).

I've replaced all the bushes as well as the coilovers on my other fun cars, that soon adds up. My other halfs BM need a good few of the bushes doing, if this needs them too my press will have more than paid for it's self!

I bet the code her BF was getting was some error code about mis-firing.
and it wasnt loosing ALL power, but does cut boost..
That will be the NPS on its way out then.

£20 part and 1/2 hour to fit.
had exactly this on my bug wagon 5x gbox.

Thanks, that sounds more like it, sorry I didn't really mean all power. From her lady like description it did translate to sounding more like a lack of boost. Once I've picked it up I'll let you know smile

That good of you to offer, complicated answer though!
I'm currently in Surrey & the car is in Peebles (Scottish Borders region). However I'm moving to Ellesmere (Shropshire) next week. I'm buying a car trailer today to move my other wrecks up to the new place so will also use it to move the WRX back to the new place in a couple of weeks.

That reminds me I must check the wagon is under 1500kg as that is weight limit of my current tow car & trailer...

Kerb weight of an Impreza Wagon is 1400kg. I can check the VIN plate of mine later if want it to nearest 10kg.

1410kg for a newage and 1306kg for a later classic IIRC.
