Can anything be done to reduce the horrific turbo lag this car has?
It is available to me for a great price but if I buy it, I will want to improve the power delivery.
Can this be done?

Personally, I would buy a hatch STi for a fraction of the price then have the engine built to my liking. However, there will always be more lag with a bigger turbo, but you may be able to do something with the compression ratio to reduce it.

Resale value is a big attraction, only 75 made.
So I have bought the car.

Scooby Clinic are giving it a better/bigger turbo, (SC46), better inlet piping, more efficient intercooling, a cold air intake system and a more efficient exhaust system.
The stock 395bhp should change to circa 500 bhp with less lag and better high-rev capability.
Should be fun when completed!

It will be fun mate, however, you will hurt the resale value as it will now be a hatch with a built engine and other mods!

Just to add, you also don't know for sure if the Cosworth build will do 500bhp safely. Having spoken to a few builders myself some would recommend getting the 2.5 block pinned (to help stabilise the cylinder walls) if you're going to that kind of power. They have also suggested machining the block and heads for 14mm head studs.

I would just see what a good mapper can do.

Take it to Powerstation, they'll sort it. Otherwise try Litchfield.

2.5 Hatch Clinder walls are a lot better (Thicker) than the Hawkeye ones, however, with 500bhp, I'd still be wanting it reinforced and 14mm head studs.

Talk to Simon at Chevron Motorsport (Stafford), he knows his beans.

Is it worth buying a Cosworth to then change the turbo, mapping and rebuild the engine? Why not save 15k, buy a normal hatch and build a 600bhp one yourself?

I'd just had a forged rebuild done on my hatch when I saw the Cosworth guys at Rallyday. Had a chat with them and they reckoned the engine was strong enough to take 800bhp (yes, really......).

I know that my build had a few neat little tricks as three of us from our club were running in excess of 500bhp in daily drivers and lessons were learned by our engine builder as a matter of course.
