With my annual work mileage coming down (and my boredom with diesels increasing) I'm looking to chop in my e39 diesel and return to Subaru. I previously had a stock 2002 WRX wagon which I absolutely loved, and am looking for another wagon. This will be my daily drive so will need to cover about 15k a year, including the occasional long (3-4 hour) journey once a month or so, and will also probably be used as a tow-car for my Westfield (combined weight of car + braked trailer will be about 900kg). I have no intention or interest in modifying, I'd rather get something that does what I want out of the box, and I want something that I can keep and look after (and will look after me) for the next three years.

I've decided on the later 2.5 litre engine for everyday drivability (I prefer low-down torque in a daily) and have a budget of up to £10k. The standard UK WRXs seem plentiful in this price range, but I'd like something with a Prodrive pack for a bit of extra power, and it looks like the GB270 has the full package - PPP, slightly lower suspension, slightly more aggressive looks etc, without being too OTT. In short, I don't think I'd get the modifying itch as it seems to have everything I want as standard.

Does anyone here have experience of the GB270? Is it worth the extra over a standard WRX wagon? Any input appreciated smile

Just be aware of the problems that may happen with the 2.5 engine

Yep - thanks. It seems to me that most issues with the 2.5 stem from modifications and increased power. I'm hoping that keeping a standard car should protect me from this.

I've posted on here before about gb270s. I'd dearly love one but they command too high a premium over a stock WRX to justify. Prices are dropping and saloons are cheaper (500 against 100 made) but I've seen a couple of what look like decent stock 2.5 on scoobynet stick at 5k money so they aren't really selling full stop it seems.
I imagine if someone offered me a good deal against our 2.5 wrx I'd be tempted but ours is a great car and its hard to justify double the money.

Interesting, thanks. I think you're right about the premium - depends on whether it would hold its higher value I suppose.

I'm planning on looking at both a 'standard' WRX wagon (with the Prodrive pack) and a GB270 at the weekend. Prices aren't far apart but the GB270 has almost twice the mileage. Just to gauge the difference between the two really.

There are a couple of mega mile wagons around at the moment but they aren't for us. Are you looking for saloon or estate?
I think you can get the equivalent of a ppp pack from other scooby specialist that are better and cheaper. If its a saloon I'd go for an rb320 but they tend to be more again.
They are getting a bit old for us. I looked when I bought our 56 plate car in 2008 and a gb270 was 14-15k and we paid 10k for ours on 4k miles so the differential was there then too.
I wish they had kept the bodyshells or that a saab 9-2x was a reality over here but sadly it ain't the case.

Estate - this will be the only semi-practical car in our fleet of three so the extra space is a must. Will see what the weekend brings smile

I ran a GB270 Wagon (No.99)for a couple of years. The only thing that bugged me was the real world mpg, shocking! Cobine it with a small fuel tank and it really screws with your head. Sub 20's are normal.

Great car otherwise but don't miss it as much as my old Classic PPP Wagon.

Oh and the tax is a bugger

Thanks for the input guys, after all that I have now put down a deposit on a standard hawkeye WRX wagon with PPP. Picking it up in a couple of weeks, can't wait!

Sub 20mpg is not normal at all. That must have been pure town (fast driving) or blasting on boost all day long.

Superb cars and the engine should be just fine although I'd suggest a Cosworth HG just to be safe but only when it's in for a big service b

Get one if you want it.
