A friend of mine has offered me his mother's old 1991 Legacy 1.8 AWD 4 door. It's a bit ropey round the edges, & it's an automatic but has only 107k miles on it. This isn't a question about what it's worth (not a lot), it's that I can't seem to find any workshop manuals for it if I decided to buy it.

Haynes USA do one but the UK version would have a few differences apart from where the steering wheel is! There are no CD-ROMs or equivalent on ebay that I can see, a a search of the web only seems to find love / support for the Impreza or the turbo Legacies. Any pointers?

Can't help much but only to say that judging by the amount of old Legacy's I saw up in the California mountains all packed full you won't be getting many problems.

Thanks. Yes I understand they were a big seller in the USA.

It's an iffy starter at the moment (on carbs, bless it!) but without any reference books, I'd be loathe to start any maintenance on it by guesswork (carburettor gap settings etc). Obviously, changing oil / spark plugs is simple but otherwise a garage would be needed and the car isn't worth expensive fettling.

Haynes did manuals for the NZ & Aus Legacy (Liberty in Aus), you might be able to find something relevant that way? Being RHD the mechanical bits should be mostly identical to the UK model. Though having said that the 1.8 was never very popular/common here, especially in 2wd form.

I've still got one somewhere for the Leone, but that was the old EA motor not the EJ.
