I've had my 2014 Forester 2.0XE for a few months now and absolutely love it. It handles well with armchair comfort and go-anywhere ability. My only slight concern is the engine noise on start-up from cold - it sounds rumbly and clattery for just a couple of seconds, until the oil circulates and builds pressure. After this it's fine - just the usual Scooby chatter.
I guess the initial racket is normal (especially as the engine immediately spins at 1800-2000 rpm tickover from cold) - or is it? Should I be concerned? Has anybody else noticed this?
Would love to hear from others out there with this FB20 engine.
Thanks.

Post the same Q? on the Forester.org website http://www.subaruforester.org/

There has been some discussion on this already. It's not unusual for the Forester engines to have increased engine revs at start up. It's where the ECU goes to ignition/engine start mode until warmed up and is a built in Subaru design...though 1800rpm seems a little high unless you're in a very cold climate. MY 2.5XT will always sit at 1200rpm idle until warm. If you lightly blip the throttle this will normally drop the idle rpm back to its normal level. Have a chat with the other Forester owners and see what they say.
