Car is a 07 petrol Forester - what'd be best?
This is down to the number of miles the engines has done. Many folk are still using 0W30 or 5W30 on their cars with 50K+ mileage, but oil...it's such an emotive subject.

The good engine re-builders rightly suggest a good 10W40, this is what I use on my 2006 FXT with 57k miles . There's a lot of good discussion on sf.org, the majority of guys use 10W40 too...and you may like to call subaru4you who also recommend 10W40 or even 10W60 on standard engines. Personally, I think 60 is too thick for standard mileage engines...and as with all oils, it's the frequency of oil and filter changes that are key...

I use Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40 with a K&N filter, and change it out after 5k miles. Which means about every 3 months for me... rolleyes

For most, a good semi synthetic 10w-40 will suffice
