Odd one that I've discovered today..

There's a watery/sloshy sound coming from behind the dash when revved. Seems to be the center, or more to the left side-ish. Doesn't happen all the time though.

I've googled this and i'm getting a few different results - air in coolant, or the heater matrix that's behind the glovebox..?

Read that it's possible to cure this, by leaving the coolant expansion cap off and leaving it to idle to a bit, what are people's views on this? Assuming the heater must be on full/hot at the time?

Thanks in advance.

I have this on mine too (04 blob wrx).
Mine only seems to do it when started from cold and like you said when it's revved you can hear water sloshing. As far as I can remember it's always been like this and I've changed the coolant a few times.
I think it's just the coolant working its way around the heater matrix as it stops after a few revs.

Turns out that it's pretty common! Nothing much to worry about then?

My Classic UK Turbo does this in cold weather when the engine's cold (or at least that's when I've noticed it).

The noise from what I have read about is trapped air in the heater core due to it being higher than the expansion tank.

What people have done over here in NZ is to try doing a really thorough job bleeding the cooling system with the car parked pointed up a steep driveway or with the front jacked up in the air.

Seems to have worked pretty well for the ones who tried it

As others have said its air in the coolant system trapped in the heater matrix behind the dash.

There's various tips on how to bleed it on Scoobynet but basically you need to take off the header tank cap (Left hand side of the engine as you look at it and above the inlet manifold) and run the engine until the system belches while slowly topping it up. I've done this a couple of times and you need to be patient as it takes about 30 minutes.

Don't believe it causes any harm if you don't bleed out the air.

Heater matrix. Fit a much, much louder exhaust solves the issue.

Absolute worst case is head gaskets (check to see of you are loosing coolant).

This fixes a whole load of issues in one go. Rattling trim, worn drop links, moaning GF..... all fixed with a Nurspec R. smile

I had this on my Bug. Posted on Scoobynet and had all the same answers as here. Planned to burp it first. Haven't got round to it yet but wierdly, I haven't noticed it recently. So maybe the cure is to post on a forum smile

Sod's law it will be back tomorrow hehe
