Hi
I'm going to look at an Outback 3.0r with an LPG conversion this week that is on eBay and having spoken to the owner have a couple of concerns.

Firstly Ihe says the LPG system has a problem where over 3000 revs it runs rough and can cut out. Is this a reasonably inexpensive problem to sort out normally? It's an OMVL dream xxi system. It runs well on petrol though.

It also has a slight leak in the exhaust , a dent in the rear wing , a scrape on the bumper, a crack in rear windscreen and a cracked mirror lens all of which I don't think bother me too much. The owner has been honest in pointing these things out to me on the phone which is good. Should I have concerns about these problems?

It is the LPG system which I'm mostly concerned about.

Any help much appreciated - I dont have any experience of these cars - I'm coming from merc estates - the outbacks seem to me to be like a modern w124 estate in many ways.

I run an LPG Outback 3.0R with an OMVL system, I've never had any issues with it.
Strong money for that one with all those issues. I agree about the S124, I've thought about that too, it even has the 2 tone dashboard. Ride comfort is similar but the Outback is a much nicer steer.

Couple of things, the exhaust are a bit of a challenge and quite expensive if they can't be welded, about £400 for a replacement system ( more from subaru)

Re LPG do you know how big the tank is and where it is ? I would have expected it to be in the boot ?

If its a donut tank in the spare wheel well it may be quite small.

Re lpg problems I am no expert but we had it on our defender, we had a similar issue and never managed to sort it so we ripped it out after 3 years of trying to find the fault

Great cars though we have a spec b legacy which is the same but just a bit sportier

I've been running a 2005 Impreza WRX for 2 year/30k miles with a Romano LPG system. I have 50l (40 actual) donut tank in the wheelwell that gives ~200 miles per fill. I've had no problems with the LPG system.

Have you thought about moving this thread to the EV/Alternative Fuel portion of the Forum. Or better yet posting your issue on one of the many LPG forums? Probably get a beter response smile

Hi
Thanks for the replies. I think I will keep looking for a non LPG outback. This one looks like it could eat another 2k after buying.

Is it a new problem or one which has existed since the LPG was installed? If it's new then the evaporator is on the fritz or perhaps the filter clogged with catalyst fines and residue. If it existed from installation then the evap may not be big enough to provide enough juice at full throttle.

I've got a 68 litre doughnut tank in the spare wheel well of mine. From empty I can get 55 litres into it normally, giving a range of 280 miles. I wouldn't let one car put you off looking for an LPG Outback, they're fantastic cars and the LPG addresses it's only foible, it's drink problem.

Buy a tidy Outback and got it converted. My Impreza cost £1270 to be converted and that included a courtesy car while mine was being done (it takes about 4 man-days to do the the conversion). A 3.0 litre will cost ~£200 more for the extra 2 injectorsand time to fit them.

The place I had mine done had done quite a few Subarus. There was a NA Impreza in for service when mine was being done and they had a Legacy lined up for conversion after mine. I'll not mention them because I'm not being paid to advertise but will happily tell you in a PM. They're in South Wales.

i had a legacy outback with omvl lpg and it did the same thing you describe. took it into a place in battersea and they diagnosed it as a water temp sensor. £80 later all fixed and good. If it's not that it could be the injectors. Whatever it is, shouldn't be hard or expensive to fix... but get it fixed, those things drink fuel like a v8.

Great cars though, super tank which i smashed around in for a year and it never let me down
