Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can help diagnose a couple of problems with my '98 Impreza Type-R. Firstly, the car has always given off quite a strong stench of fuel, which originally I attributed to the car running rich and being in need of a map.

The car has since been mapped and the smell continues. When brimming the tank yesterday, I noticed a puddle of fuel had formed under the car, which was close to the driver's side rear wheel. It's never happened before, but having got on my hands and knees there was fuel dripping from somewhere, but it only appeared to leak when the tank was full. I ran it for a few miles, parked up and checked again, and the leak had stopped. This may sound daft, but is there a crude overflow facility, or is it more likely a corroded fuel line/ filler neck? As I say, the fact that its intermittent at the minute is what's confusing me.

As for the washer jets, this has baffled me too. I know there's two inscriptions on the stalk on how to wash the front window, but neither movement works. The bottle is full and isn't leaking, the pump is whirring when the stalk is pulled, the jets aren't blocked, but nothing is coming out of them? Any ideas as to what it could be?

Any help's appreciated!

Thanks,

John

Fuel leak will be the rotten filler neck, which happens to all classics at some point. Combination of being a trap for mud and moisture and rusting from inside out.

Not the easiest of jobs I understand as the screws/bolts tend to be rusted.

Check your fuel hoses under the bonnet as well, as these become very hard and brittle in time. I had both of these problems, so with hindsight was lucky the car didn't go up in flames!

My car doesn`t seem to leak fuel that I know of but I have noticed that after filling it up a couple of times coming back to the car a couple of weeks later to 3/4 of a tank.

From this thread I am now guessing its evaporating from a hole in the filler neck?

Hi JohnoVR6

recently had my fuel lines replaced on a '99 Impreza Type R, my issue was the fuel lines had corroded whilst in storage

my problem was from the fuel tank side, and along the fuel lines, these run under the rear seats and then down under the car,it was dripping fuel and we only noticed due to the smell, got a garage to customs make some pipe lines for me took them a couple of hours start to finish, so quite a simple job

and in regards to the spray, might sound silly, but there is a button on the very end of the wiper stalk, this makes them spray whilst it is held, but there is also a switch that goes either forwards or backwards, but as far as i can work out this does nothing !

hope that helps, any other questions happy to try and answer smile

On my '97 Turbo 2000, the button on the end of the stalk is engages the washers and moves the wipers while it's held down. Pulling the stalk towards you does a single wipe (or continues for as long as it's held forward).

The labelling on the stalk is not very informative, and if anything actually appears to be incorrect, as it seems to imply that pulling forward will engage the washers - which it doesn't!
