I currently have a 2005 WRX wagon SL, which has now had all the improvements possible and I am not sure how much I can really push a "std" car before it become more sensible to just buy the STI.

As such I am thinking a WRX STI spec D, but the whole 2.5l engine worries me!

Should I be worried?

As other wise I am thinking an EVO FQ MR 320.

Intrested in people thoughts.

Many thanks

There are issues with the 2.5. Head gaskets being the main one followed by ringland failure. Better head studs solves the first issue, and forged pistons the latter.

The problems tend to surface when you turn the power up.

How much power do you want and how much money do you want to spend? What have you done so far? If you fit a VF35 turbo from an STi, you can get 330/350 bhp from the 2.0 WRX engine. That’s about the accepted level of power for the WRX ‘box to reliably take. Some survive with more, other with less. But realistically, if you want 350+bhp, you are better starting with an STi, as it will come with the stronger 6-Speed, tuning is cheaper, DCCD, Brembo’s etc.

However, you can’t get an STi wagon (unless you find a very rare Bugeye, which was only JDM and very few imported), so if you want a wagon, you’ll have to start with a WRX. As I say how much do you want to spend? You can fit everything from an STi, into a WRX, if you want to keep a wagon. Otherwise, buy an STi, if you want more than 350+bhp.

With regards to the 2.5, it’s generally reported that the STi engine has the most issues, when tuned. The WRX doesn’t seem quite so effected (within reasonable mods). It drives differently to the 2.0, more torque, less revs. Ultimately you’ll run into the same issues as the 2.0l – it makes no sense to start with a WRX if you want 350+bhp.

Well I looked at that option of installing a STI turbo, intercooler, uppipe, Y pipe, injectors and then Remap but that's say circa £1200.

I am not sure I would get that cash back. I would also then want to change the brakes, which would then mean new bigger wheels and new tyres.

So I am thinking of selling it.

These go from £3,000 - £5500

I was thinking going for around £4500?

What you think?

Hurst have an STI-A line in stock, its sort of the JDM version of the Spec D (well the other way around) but has the 2ltr twin scroll engine which is a better unit (more reliable, more tunable without having to take the engine apart, line it, forge it and pray it doesnt crack between the cylnders etc) and is nice and has fantastic torque delivery over the 2.5 standard unit seen in the UK?EU/US cars.

Link for Hurst cars, they come highly recommended smilehttp://www.hurstcars.co.uk/used-cars/subaru-imprez...
