Hi all,
I currently have 215/45/17 tyres on my standard 03 WRX Wagon.
Would there be any issues with fitting 225/45/17 tyres?
Main factor is the wider tyre is cheaper to buy (???)
Thanks.

It depends on rim width. The 225 tyres are obviously wider, but multiple tyre widths will fit on the same width rim.

ETRTO books give the specified allowable tyre widths for a given rim width. Most tyre places should be able to advise from these books. I will try and remember to have a look at the books tomorrow when I'm back in work.

Thanks very much.
The wheels are standard rims.

Standard rim width of he 17" WRX wheels is 7J. This is the rim width used by the standards when measuring a 215/45R17 tyre.

However, 225/45R17's will also fit on a 7J rim. This is the narrowest rim a 225 will fit on, but are measured ona 7.5J rim.

So, yes, a 225/45R17 tyre will fit on the standard wheels, but check clearance to other components as the tyre will fit differently.

Thanks very much for the info.
I don't really want to mess around with other bits, so I think I'll go with correct tyre width.
Much appreciated though!

I've had 225/45/17 on a WRX wagon for 4 or 5 years now. Standard WRX (7j) wheel on standard suspension.

I assume this is because the previous owner confused the WRX and STI sizes in the handbook (they had written STI tyre pressures in biro on the front too). When it came to changing them I just went like for like without actually checking they were correct. I only found out when I purchased a low mile '05 to replace my '02 that the original tyres were 215.

I can't honestly advise you on the pros and cons of changing size, but I can confirm that on the standard WRX wheel / suspension, I've never had any issues with the 225s.

Thanks for the replies.
I went for standard size Uniroyal Rainsport 3's.
£54 each.
