I'd have thought insurance would be a nightmare.

Depends which Impreza - the faster ones can be a recipe for an inexperienced driver to have a very big crash, the slower ones should be fine.

Examples of slower ones?

Ones without a turbocharger. They still have a ~130bhp 2.0 engine, more than enough to get a tyro driver into trouble. My Cavalier SRi was a 115bhp 1.8 and that was plenty.

Insurance on the 1.5 is very cheap and I would think one would make an appealing first car. You might not win many straight line races but its a taste of what Subaru is about ( symmetrical awd , boxer and lower centre of gravity). Add to this that Subaru petrols in N/A form should be rock solidly reliable and fairly easy to work on.

The 1.5 and 2.0 come with a dual range gearbox ( mainly for towing / mud ) but using this with some decent gear changes should bring the 0/60 time down a little , plus it recreates a slight transmission whine that reminds me of the rally cars.

£4000 for this. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2007-Subaru-Impreza-1-5-...

And this one below that Sisley found looks a good price!

We had the NA 2.0 Sport estate. I quite liked it, it was competent in winter conditions and down muddy tracks and wet fields. Great fishing car. It was, however, dog slow, thirsty, and the engine was bland. It died when the engine crapped its innards out on the M6.

yes

Depending on what age of Impreza you're looking at and what they sold in your market, there were various 1.5, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5 non turbo versions made.

My first car was an old Subaru Leone (1.8 but probably comparable to a newer 1.5 Impreza for power), my second was a 2.0 Legacy and even the 150bhp from that was probably plenty for me at the time.

I think the 1.5 is just front wheel drive, I could be wrong about the hatch models though!

Simon, didn't think about this model of Impreza as a first car - do it!

All the Impreza hatches have symmetrical awd , manual N/A models ( uk spec ) in 1.5 and 2.0 are equipped with dual range.

If you are looking at 1.5 hawkeyes ( 2005ish to 2008 ) then I think they only came in the wagon in the UK. I believe the blobeye( 2003 - 2005 ) only came in 2.0 N/A and 2.0 turbo and the bugeye( 2000 - 2003 ) offered a 1.6 in saloon and wagon. All these were S AWD. They did make a classic impreza fwd only but I think this was stopped in the late 90's.

I'd love to own a Subaru at somepoint, something tells me I won't be able to afford it yet though!

Why did I have to move to the other side of the world?! haha. There are Subaru's EVERYWHERE here in Oz, but the prices here are insane.

Will - you can hold me to the fact that one day I claimed I'd own a Subaru! haha.

It is the latest version of the Justy. I don't think they sell it here any more. It was a rebadged Daihatsu or Suzuki or something, with no boxer engine and no four wheel drive. So not really a Subaru at all then.

Yes, sorry, it was a badly-executed joke. It's a Justy, tinny little fwd thing with the 3-pot Aygo engine. Probably more first-driver friendly, but if you can afford an Impreza you should go for it smile

The original 4wd flat-4 engined Justy was an awesome little car. But then somebody decided that no-one wanted a small city car with 4wd. Apart from all the people flocking to buy Panda 4x4s.
