I really wouldn't mind one of these. Apart from press type road tests and reviews there seems to be little information about them from actual owners. Hardly anyone with them on any UK forums. One point of concern is over the reliability of the STi's 2.5 engine as there were a lot of issues with the hatchback cars and I've not seen anything to say there have been any real changes ?

Hi,
I know what you mean. I've seen only 1 2014 plate in the last year I reckon. It's not like I wouldn't notice one either.
In my area there are a couple of 2011 models, one 330 saloon and one hatch. Otherwise the recent stuff seems quite elusive.

I don't know who they are going for with them really - I love turbo Subarus (pre hatchback) and think the new one looks great, but I test drove one fully intending to buy it and didn't like it at all. People who don't love Subarus won't buy it because the interior is a bit rubbish and the tax is high, plus there aren't many dealers about.

I am going to get one out on test drive with an open mind and see what I think from there. I've had a few Imprezas in the past and rated them highly. One concern for me personally is the comfort of the seats. The seats in my last one, a Bug STi, played my back up which made the car a disappointment. Yet I find Classic seats are all day comfortable! The new one is widely spoken of as the best STi ever, it's a return to the saloon - everyone moaned in '08 when the hatch was launched! - it has a lot of kit on it and it is a good bit cheaper than the hatch STi was as well. There are some low mileage demo '14 / '15 cars around at the moment for £26k / £27k. Still a chunk of money I know but that seems a lot of car. New Blob STi's were that sort of money new 10 years ago. I cannot decide whether the new one is a bit of a bargain or have things just moved on and it is an oddball car in todays market?

I understand just over 500 have been sold since launch.

I wonder where they all are, as I can honestly say I've not seen one out on the road myself. There are a lot of dealer registered / demo ones - not sure if the 500 'sold' would include those? The rarity / different / it's not yet another VAG group vehicle yawn type thing has a real appeal in itself - it's almost like it's back to the early 90's when they were still quite rare and before the Impreza Turbo boomed massively in popularity and then sadly going on through the chav ownership stages. Impreza deserved better than that and thankfully that era seems to have passed!?

The 500 refers to those registered at DVLA, I see only two regular 'faces' on the Yorkshire / Lancashire border where I live, one blue one grey. Maybe they're all North of the Border where they have always seemed more popular.

It's not that they're not selling, they've all been sold. The first years production run for the UK was only (meant to be) 100 cars. Talking with a local dealer at a rally there on saturday, this year is still only 250 cars.

Subaru's production lines are full, they sold more cars last year than any previous.

I haven't had a drive in the "new" one yet, but had a good poke around the one on display, the interior whilst not RR is still leaps and bounds better than my blobeye. Initial thoughts are that the seats are also a big improvement, and I hadn't thought there was anything wrong with my own. If it's half as good to drive as everyone rants, then it will be some machine indeed.

I've got one, but have still only seen 3 others on my travels.
Its just had its first service (10000), so it's not like the car is hiding away.

It should have waited 4 months from ordering it, but they must have had a blue demo going somewhere and blagged mine early. Waited 2 months in the end. 5 miles on the clock when I picked it up.

Love it. Still nice to get the RB out every so often though, no creature comforts on that.

The dealer where I've been to take a look have 2 new unregistered cars and 1 demo car all for sale. Was also told that several as yet unsold 2016 model year cars are ordered and due for arrival later in the year although exact changes to current spec seems to unknown at this time.

I had seen your one on another thread somewhere! Looks nice. Care to elaborate on what it's like to live with? How is the comfort / refinement on longer journeys and do you get anything like the claimed fuel economy figures?

I've also not seen a single one 2014/15 model STI on the road and i do a lot of travelling about, have seen more Peugeot RCZ R's and they only had 300 due to go to the UK.
Subaru just dont sell well any more, they sold less than 3000 cars in total last year, 392 or so being the mew STI, 10-12 years ago they were selling 5000 STI's alone per year, just to rub it in, vw sold around 3300 Golf R models last year, wonder where the Subaru owners went.... (it doesnt help with the 2.5ltr engine farce either, just pray the FA is better but the n/a versions seen to be problematic to date). frown

Very nice to live with. Comfortable, smooth and easy to drive hard. But can also be sensible, managed to get it reading 38.8 mpg going through motorway roadworks at 50 mph (couldn't get more than this).
It reckons it has averaged 25.5mpg so far, and I have worked out that that is about right. Not sure what the claimed figures are, it was never factored into my buying thought process, I just wanted one.
I like the fact that there aren't many around, people stare (at the car, not me, so that is fine), people tend to get out of the way (maybe they think it is a cop car), and it's just different.
I think, "Go and get a Golf or a BMW or an Audi, be a sheep." I've seen more Golf R things than STIs, BORING.

I really love it. It's a bit tight in the garage, I reckon it will just fit without folding the mirrors, but I always fold them. Luckily there is a button for this, none of this getting out and doing it (like for the RB).

Really? Do you think so?
Where do you think all those guys who purchased STI's in the 00's went? Yup they are the "boring" ones who purchased better than what Subaru are offering, and its a shame, Subaru are just too far behind the game, same old crap 2.5ltr engine that they deny has any issues with, they don't sell cars like they use to, overall since they brought the BRZ out they have sold less than 400, 400!!! Toyota on the other hand has shifted shed loads of them.

I.M. could have brought 2000 STI's in to the country in 2014 and they would still have not sold 1500 of them, no dealer network any more, far too expensive, un economical, just not as good as it should be (how many driver aids?! even my fwd doesn't have as many), this is why people are going elsewhere, there are much better cars to be had in this bracket now with more power, better economy, lower tax bands, more fun to drive... I do hope Subaru can do something to correct this, they really do need to up their quality control and engineering departments and I.M. need a good kick up the backside, holding literally no stock of anything and having customers waiting MONTHS for basic parts, not good if you want people buying your cars.

Wasn't the BRZ/GT86 volume proportion an agreement between the manufacturers for certain markets?

As for STI vs Golf-R... similar performance, similar real fuel economy (the Golf makes big claims which nobody achieves), the Golf is more expensive and more luxurious, the Subaru is (according to every review I've read) far more fun to drive.

Your local importer might still be rubbish though!

I'm delighted they're selling. Fingers crossed in a few years I'll be able to pick on up.

I understand that that ths engine is no longer the EJ25, but a new stronger version, or is this another Internet myth?
