The sti I am about to purchase has a really mucky engine bay, dealer has told me that Subaru told him it's because the muck stick to it as it has a waxy residue on it, can anyone confirm this?

If its done a few miles and the engine not been spruced up at all by the dealer then I wouldnt be surprised if its a bit mucky.

How dirty are we talking and how many miles?

It's covered only 8500 miles, didn't see if the tray was missing, my 97 legacy is spotless in comparison, have asked for proof of this from Subaru (never heard of waxing the engine before) or a spanking clean engine on Saturday so I can monitor if something is leaking!

Mine was, and still mostly is, covered in a greeny wax stuff. They coat it to protect it while on the ship over from Japan. I wouldn't worry about it.
