Could you send me details of your mates WR1 that he is selling please.
What makes this car special? looks slightly modified to me? is this something that will go up in value?

I doubt there are many cars out there right now, let alone Subarus, that represent good value for money in terms of purely investment purposes, unless it's ultra low milage and you're prepared to treat it strictly as a garage queen for at least another 10 years.
like this...how much?!!http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/classic-auct...

Any mint 22B with ultra low miles and that you're prepared to pay top dollar for, not drive for 10 years and keep it fully serviced and maintained might, just might, break even some may say...
Back to the real world; buying anything other than the 22B is simply a bigger gamble, and one I wouldn't put £40k in to. Good luck with your search and return on investment. It would be great to let us know what you do buy and for how much and then come back on the day you eventually sell to realise your investment and share what your net profit was.

If you have £40k to make an investment bugger getting a Scoob.
Friend bought an R34 GTR for about £37k earlier this year, bit of tidying up and now looking at offers of £60k+.
Sticking with Subaru most of the sensible choices have been mentioned, the RB5 is another one on the up. P1s have doubled in price in the last 2 years and you could buy 2-3.
Which one you go for depends on a couple of things, how much money you are looking to make and what sort of drive you are after. There is a vast difference in the feel of a classic and new age.
Apologies for sounding a bit blunt but why is it you want a Scoob? Most people spending 1/4 of what you have available on Scoobs are fans of the brand and you don't even seem to know which model is which. Everyone else I know who is willing to drop £30k on them is like a Subaru encyclopaedia
