I have a 64 plate Golf TDi, 150PS with the DSG box. Use it to do about 50 miles a day commute, it does nothing wrong.

Contemplating a change that won't cost me too much and I keep finding myself looking at something Japanese and have always had a hankering for a Subaru.

Just looking at current used models on their website and similar age Outbacks and Legacy's seem to be vaguely sensible money.

Anyone know anything about the diesels and the auto's? Before people beat me for asking about the auto I go up and down mainly dual carriageways and stop/start traffic and having had a couple of auto's now I'm not sure I can be arsed with a manual for the odd blast out.

I feel qualified to answer your question. We currently have a 2014 Outback manual and also a diesel Forester with the lineartronic box. The diesel lineartronic combination is very good, lots of torque from 1000rpm and circa 44mpg local running in the hilly Yorkshire Dales, I drove over to Liverpool airport recently and got a respectable 51 mpg over the whole journey, expect very similar figures from the Outback. The cars in general are very tough and very reliable, I've had them for 30 years and keep on buying them, the poor weather capability is superb.
As I'm sure you're aware 2015 models are the 'new' Outback and are much improved over the predecessor. The dealer network is generally very good, I've used two in my part of the world and both a very good. I'm sure your local dealer will be only too pleased to loan you a car for a couple of days, that way you can get a real feel for the car. Residuals are also very reasonable.
