As an aside, the structures built by the sophisticated Spaniards have been far less able to withstand the earthquakes which regularly hit the area.
Peru remains and enigmatic and hugely fascinating country with a very ancient culture (possibly the very first cities on the planet)
Recomend anyone (with a head for heights) to go and have a look at!
I recall that the Colosseum had grooves cut in the stones which had copper metal bars inserted in them and sealed in with lead to ensure that in an earthquake, the stones wouldn't fall when they moved. It's held up pretty well given what it's been through.Peru remains and enigmatic and hugely fascinating country with a very ancient culture (possibly the very first cities on the planet)

Building without mortar may have been a response to the same problem. I'm sure they built plenty of cheap crap too, but if you need something to stay around you'll put in the effort.
I wonder how long Onkalo will last.
