I finished work early and the bus is late. It's definitely the beginning of the end.

Hoping for good northern lights tonight. Yesterday there was a lot of cloud cover so didn't see anything. There wasn't too much cloud cover earlier today but it looks to be getting worse again... frown

Well I spotted a near-miss over the Olympic stadium, so perhaps air traffic control is being affected. yikes

I was sitting on one of those stone plinths directly in front of the stadium, having cycled down the canal and up onto the Greenway.

One plane coming from the south 'tother climbing from the west. North bound slightly higher, at a guess, would say 100/150 feet than the eastbound but about two to three plane-lengths apart. Never for one minute thought there was danger of collision but, thought a tad close for comfort.

Thanks

Chance of seeing the Northern Lights at lower altitudes apparently...

What sort of time is best to catch these; dusk or later on in the night?
They usually recommend local midnight but its more a case of if a storm is happening at your midnight you have the best chance of seeing something rather than there is a better chance of a storm at midnight if you see what i mean.

bottom line, is it needs to be dark, cloud free and away from light pollution at the same time as a storm, this one is happening now so not much use here at 2pm. keep any eye on the planetary K index halfway down the left column on http://www.spaceweather.com/ to see if the storm continues tonight. A value of 5 you may see something low in the northern sky in Scotland, it would need to be closer to 8 or 9 for the south, although dont rely on the website data!!!

Maybe of use to see what Kp index is needed in relation to your location as to whether you'll see some action. I need a reading of 9 down here in Essex.

Well I'm in Trondheim (Norway) so need 3, but there was not a thing out there! No clouds either, although it started to cloud over now.

The IMF Polar angle is returning north again so looks like things are weakening at the moment, it had been firmly in the yellow earlier, the further south it points the greater the chances are that something is going on.

doesn't mean things cant change rapidly though.

Just to get you in the mood, this is what they looked like at 35,000ft over northern Canada last month

If they can clear the clouds.....

There have been a few big bursts lately, but the sun is a sphere (obviously).

Very useful site. I use a few others too so I can see new ones when they are released and how they progress along with the app for my phone letting me know within minutes of them hitting our detector.
