I have always had an interest in Space, the Universe and the Sciences involved. One thing that bothers me though, well not really bothers me that I can't sleep at night, but just bothers me. The other planets in the Solar System have moons, they all have interesting names, Titan, Io, Phobos etc etc. We here on Earth only have one moon, called The Moon, hardly exciting is it? Why doesn't it have an interesting name?

It signifies how important it is. THE moon.
Similar to I'm going for THE piss, rather than I'm going for a piss.

It's the Moon other planets have moons note the small "n" I suppose if we'd taken the red indian name we'd probably be calling it "big fat thing in the sky"

It stands to reason - the Moon was the first one to be discovered, and it was called the Moon. After that, astronomers discovered other planets, and later discovered that those planets had smaller bits of rock orbiting them, just like the Moon orbits Earth, so those bits of rock were generically called moons. As someone else said, the Moon is the most important so it doesn't need another name to identify it.

Venus is a similar sized planet to earth yet doesn't have a moon.
So we're lucky, regardless of the name.
