Totally agree, I am sure those that do go for the ride will have a blast of a time and then off to tell every one all about it.

I reckon the recent 'The Martian' film captured some of what may happen in the future but I guess its doubtful its going to be a common place trip for the next couple of Hundred Years if then.

The Challenges and costs are just so huge for a few to go, so to think its going to be available for Jo and Joe to go to Mars as a nice trip are quite far out.
That was the general view of civil air travel in the 1920s; 80 years later you could fly across the atlantic for a couple of weeks wages. It would not surprise me if a similar timescale will apply to space tourism.

I mentioned this early on in the thread and Toaster was still not convinced. He's got a bee in his bonnet over this project so no rational explanation will make him think otherwise. I wouldn't bother making any efforts - he's set his mind against Virgin Galactic.

Transatlantic ballistic transports have been knocking around in SF stories for decades - would be nice to see it come true, and wouldn't be that much of a leap from Virgin Galactic's current project.

Not really against Virgin Galactic just the pointlessness of a fair ground ride to nowhere. Real space travel is hard and dangerous if it wasn't then people would be skipping off to Mars or even the moon right here right now.

Just because Virgin and Blue origin may lob people up a few thousand feet and back down does not make it space travel the technology has not yet been invented to make regular space travel a reality and once it has, maybe just maybe a space tourism company emerge.

you can double or triple that timescale and it will certainly cost more than a couple of weeks wages, just think how much it costs for Oxygen, food and water for a year!..........mind you you could always substitute real food with soylant green or similar that may keep costs down

What I am doing is questioning the benefit and validity of what is after all a mainly pointless Joy ride.....it serves no purpose.
Joy is the only purpose in life.

I think it may have been A.C.Clarke who remarked, when ballistic passenger transport was mentioned, that he couldn't see the appeal of a mode of transport where for half of the trip the lavatory was out of reach, and for the other half it was out of order.

Maybe not in Toaster's rather curmudgeonly life.

You won't need a lavatory on the Galactic craft the trips too short.........maybe a sick bag though

No need to resort to hocus pocus. You wear your heart on your sleeve and as a result, you have become extremely predictable.

From a psychological point of view, I would call it a "conditioned response".

It's a step towards commercial spaceflight though, much like the joyrides the old barnstormers gave to people in the 1920s and 1930s were steps towards today's airline services

Just like many people didn't see the value of aircraft back in the 1900s wink
