anyone care to explain water one, as a little wheel to catch flow could generate electricity be it in small qualities.

edit it is Boyle's self-flowing flask but seems to work better here

but some good ideas on the video.

Yes, it's fake. The water finds its own level and that will equate to the level in the flask.

I remember one at a science fair (you'd call it now).

It took two things to figure it out:

1/ a good length of time, and

2/ a mate who saw through it.

What fooled me was the generous degree of oiling taking place before the start. The idea being, of course, to reduce friction. However, the oil could only flow one way. It was, in effect, a simple balance. Cleverly done, although not by a scientist but by a 'magician.

They really are good fun aren't they.

I'm determined to get little Ex interested in this sort of stuff, myself and Grandpa Ex are hatching fun build plans as we speak.

You have to admit that it looks so real to the untrained eye, and for some of them it is hard to believe that such a small amount of input energy keeps them running for so long.

I'll report back when we have some thing built!

I guess the trick to a really convincing fake is to use an effect which is not that well known and throw in some misdirection. Superconductivity, a light mill, maybe using the convection from the cooling...

There isn't a trick. It's just a nice low friction environment which looks really clever. Leave it running for a few hours, days months, years. Whatever. It will stop.
