NASA engineers think the reason Opportunity's computer has been rebooting recently is due to duff flash memory - so they are going to reformat it. Fingers crossed !

Great, NASA are recruiting technicians from PC World.

How do they know some alien lizard didn't whack it with a fossilised thighbone?

Presumably when it reformats it can be told to mark the bad area.

Those two rovers have to have been one of the best value space missions ever.

I can't believe Opportunity has been active for 10 years, that is amazing and a credit to the engineers and designers. Hope the reformatting goes well.

Amazing what NASA do with relatively humble electronics, albeit radiation hardened.

It would be a great shame if it doesn't work... or the only solution is pressing the reset button on the side :-)

This reminds me of Larry Niven's short story Plaything
