Pope Finally Admits Evolution and the Big Bang Are Fact
Discussion
clever
pope making a public statement is something that could be in the news
catholic church 'admitting that evolution and big band are fact' is not new news

just some elements of the media and the public mistaking the pope for the leader of all christians

Not news?!?!
Best inform just about every media outlet on the planet who all deemed it 'news'.
Of course if you and eric don't think so then I'm sure they've all made a huge mistake.
The media often makes "news" out of items that aren't really "news". They just want to create "headlines" so they can sell their papers.Best inform just about every media outlet on the planet who all deemed it 'news'.

For those of us who know a bit about the history of a particular subject - such as the history of how The Big Bang theory developed over 70 years, this story was most definitely not news.

And, if anyone is wondering about whether the Vatican supports science or not - here's the Vatican Observatory at Castel Gondolfo (the Pope's Summer Residence).
You can read about the Vatican Observatory here -

Yeah. Their record on supporting science is totally blemish free, apart from censoring this chap and subjecting him to lifetime imprisonment. You can read about the Vatican Observatory here -

Nobody is claiming that the Catholic Church is blemish free.
All I was saying is that in MODERN times (post about 1920) the Vatican has, by and large, embraced most of the "big" theories that underly modern science, such as nuclear physics, the big bang, evolution etc.
It is the fundamentalist (usually American or African) Christian Churches that seem to be holding out against science.
I know all about Galileo and his run in with the Catholic Church - which was half a millenium ago. If he had been living in any country which was in the throes of The Reformation, he would have got into trouble there too - with the possible exceptions of perhaps England or Holland.
Kepler was a protestant and he narrowly escaped being burned at the stake himself.
