The rocket & support ships are nearly back in Florida. They should arrive later today / early tomorrow.

It certainly has a bit of a tilt on it.

Oh yes. About a 5 degree tilt apparently.

They've been bobbing around outside the port for a couple of days now, but they're finally bringing it in now. The delay yesterday was due to the arrival of a British trident submarine, HMS Vengeance. Herself in Port Canaveral to have her own rockets seen to.

I saw an interview with Elon Musk a while ago where he said he was confident that it would be OK potentially up to 9 degrees.

A better view:

You can see they've chained it down to the deck this time to stop it leaning any more.

Didn't the first landing fall over due to the legs not being strong enough?

I think Musk said a collet didn't lock as it was blocked by ice, not really a strength issue. For this one he said the tilt is because they have a disposable crush core (crumple zone) to absorb a heavy impact. It does look very tilted doesn't it?

The one that keeled over after landing was an earlier model (Falcon 9 v1.1). That was the last flight of that model.

The current rocket (Falcon 9 v1.1 Full Thrust) has stronger landing gear amongst a number of other improvements. Looks like it needed it this time.

I guess it goes without saying, but SpaceX must be such an exciting place to work. The daily thrill of pushing the boundaries, doing new and remarkable things and sharing the failures and the successes must be exhilarating.

I suspect being shouted at by Elon Musk and set near-impossible tasks may take the shine off it a little though!

How shouty is he? Many leaders aren't like that. Those who worked with Werner Von Braun said he led by example and was a true inspiration - and never raised his voice.

I see enough excited people in the flight recordings to believe that working conditions may be better than you think.

There is an interesting interview with Elon on YouTube where he talks about one of his mistakes, a mistake that he has made a number of times but now works hard to avoid, being to focus too much on peoples talent and not their personalities and talks about the fact that it's important to have people with big hearts. He talks about his brother being the nicest person he has ever known and how he now tries to recruit people with big hearts as that's an important component of the culture.

He also says that there is a strict policy at SpaceX to sack aholes smile

So I'd still say it must be awesome to work there.

If I was 30 years younger I'd be applying for a job there - in any capacity.
