There's a rumour that the passengers are Saudi princes - after all the whingeing about SpaceX daring to go to the moon at all, especially if they do it before NASA do, imagine the furore if the rednecks find it won't even be US citizens going !

Well, we'll have to live somewhere else eventually. We are the first species on Earth to have the potential to sidestep extinction; might as well get on with it. Imagine a world where everyone was focused on doing that, and trying to be the best that we can be, rather than gawping at soaps on telly and updating facebook. So what if it's difficult, just work harder.
Extinction is probably the top of the list for us humans......Nothing is forever, never has been and never will be

If I didn't have a wife and kid I'd volunteer in a heartbeat (if they were asking hehe) to be one of the first even with all the downsides you mention.
So would that be permanently or just a brief visit? Mind you there are some Guys who would go because of the Wife and Kids

I'd go permanently to be part of it.

I think you'll see people on Mars Eric, let alone the moon, if Musk gets his way.
Would be great to see in my life.
Ill die happy if I see us colonise another planet. It will be so so historic. Probably moreso than anything else which has come before.

It will be like living in a 2* hotel FFS just how 'great' is that. Even if the imaginary scenario of creating an atmosphere was real just how many centuries would it take before you could go outside.

Mind you if your a person who likes cruises it may suit.........but it would all just be horrendously worse
Some people are born explorers - they are driven to put their bodies and minds through stress and torment simply to explore the unknown... others prefer the comfort and warmth of an open fire and a steak & ale pie. We need both types of people to continue civilisation.

Really? I'm not sure about this colonisation of Mars if we can't have bacon while we're doing it. Presumably the boffins will have invented a way of growing scotch eggs in a test tube by then. lick

No problem. Regarding the bacon, I have an answer.

If Elon Musk ever created a device to produce energy from waste he would so use this as the design. Even now 28 years later it looks like it should work (as this is the science section - it clearly doesn't work).

OK - it would have to be one of these then -

There's a few of these on Mars already.

Fortunately the dire predictions in SF literature about colonists never getting fresh meat as it would be impossible to support the required animals probably won't happen, thanks to advances in lab-grown meat https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultured_meat

There was also a rather good short story by Robert Silverberg about two men in a moonbase, tired of dehydrated milk, trying to build their own artificial cow. The story was called 'Hi Diddle Diddle' smile

Kind of, but I doubt Musk is offering jaunts round the Moon for $250k.

The issue VG and BO will have is that I'd put money Musk will have his Mars rocket in LEO before they enter commercial service.
Someone said the $250k was just the deposit (though that doesn't sound as significant as the press release suggested)

I have no doubt Musk will do the above.
Virgin are charging $250k for their experience is what I was saying, so I doubt a moon loop would in the same cost ballpark
Ah, sorry, misunderstood and yes, you're right, very different levels of cost/experience.

All this talk about the moon is somewhat pointless since SpaceX and their mystery passengers aren't going to the moon...

They are whizzing past and (far more interestingly but undiscussed) alledgedly going "further out into space than anyone has been before" to paraphrase the SpaceX press release.

Frankly since SpaceX would have done this launch anyway at some point it seems obvious and a no-brainier to take a couple of mugs money while they are at it, even it it just covers the fuel costs it's a bonus- since SpaceX will likely try to recover their 1st stages as is becoming the norm.

I wonder how far they intend to go, is it just to get a Mars return speed for Dragon for its re-entry perhaps?
