I am amazed they are happy to attempt the 1st stage landing in the dark.

In how long will the landing attempt be made?

A couple of minutes. It only takes about five minutes from stage separation for it to fall back from the edge of space.

So uh, is the landing bit underwater? What's the purple camera showing? Inside a fuel tank?

I know nothing!

Not sure myself.

They weren't planning on showing live images of the 1st stage landing.

They just said they lost tracking of the 1st stage as it went below the horizon and will be waiting for news from the recovery team. Dragon got to orbit ok.

Musk tweeted that close but no cigar this time.

Does that mean it crashed?

And if so, what did it do to the barge?

If it did crash, I wonder will they release footage?

It was always a tall order.

The tweet: "Rocket made it to drone spaceport ship, but landed hard. Close, but no cigar this time. Bodes well for the future tho."

Hopefully we'll see some video of the landing attempt released later

Before signing off their YouTube live seed they said that events were now happeinng at over-the-horizon distance from land and that the recovery team would update via social media later in the morning

One of the big differences between a proper NASA mission as opposed to these private enterprise missions is that NASA would always release images or film/video of when things went wrong. The commercial operators are far less open about their failures. For instance, we still haven't seen footage of the Dream Chaser crash landing from its glide flight over a year ago.

Hopefully SpaceX will be a bit more open. After all, the funding of these ISS resupply flights is coming from the US taxpayer.

"" Ship itself is fine. Some of the support equipment on the deck will need to be replaced... "

-Elon Musk on Twitter"

So they managed to hit the target

And just discovered they are communicating through RAF Oakhanger - just down the road from me at Bordon.

Hee hee.

Read that as - "the barge is thrashed and will need to be rebuilt" - possibly.

As I expected. Landing in the dark would mean they had poor opportunity to see what actually happened. As Musk says, they will (literally perhaps) piece together the events using telemetry and recovered wreckage.

I'm sure they'll keep trying until they get it right.
