You can but you won't see a thing. I tried it in '99.
You just saw the sun then?
Last full eclipse was 99.

(Unless a whoosh parrot was in the way of course, but as there's no smileys or hint of sarcasm it's hard to tell)
There was no sarcasm to read. smile

I was stood outside in Essex in 1999, using a welding mask to look at the eclipse. The mask was too dark. I couldn't see anything through it.
Me!, me! I know I know.

It was nighttime?

I remember checking it out in 1999. Not sure what I was expecting, tbh!

Will my mrs let me have sex while wearing the welding mask?
She lets me so I don't see why not.
Q - Why are you so fat?
A - Because every time I shag your Mrs she gives me a biscuit

There was an 'expert' on the radio yesterday pointing out that welding masks are no good as as the most dangerous radiation is in the ultraviolet region. Clearly someone who doesn't know the first thing about arc/mig/tig welding.

My 13 rated welders mask is a bit brighter than a colleagues proper eclipse viewing specs but not drasticly so.

I think they think welding masks are just really dark sunglasses.

I remember using a bit of an old broken welding mask in 99 and it was perfect. But greeny tinted.

As I said in the other thread...they don't want to tell people it's OK to use welders masks cos [stupid] people might use automatic ones that might not dim if used to view the sun.
Old school fixed filters are fine.

Anyway...can I use my official eclipse viewing glasses to weld? biggrin
