As per title. Can anybody point me in the direction of the best book for a novice to help them start to understand space.

Thanks

I've got the previous edition of this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cosmos-Journey-Beginning-T...

It's a "coffe table book", ie, large hardback full of frankly incredible pictures. More pictorial than textual, but there's enough explanation. It starts with earth, goes through the moon, planets, stars, nebulae, clusters, galaxies, galaxy clusters...it gives a real sense of the scale of it all. If you've the space (hur hur), I'd recommend it.

Space is a big place smile

And it's a big topic.

Is there any particular aspect of space that you are interested in?

The solar system?
Moons
Planets
Galaxies
Cosmology?
Spaceflight (manned or unmanned)?
